A few years ago Windsock published a couple of small drawings from a
training manual IIRC that showed the internal arrangement of the Salamander
cockpit. It wasn't too informative, as the cockpit sidewalls were of
nondescript black. What I gleaned from that drawing was that in all
probabilities the cockpit was made up of steel sheets, with an internal
wooden structure similar to the Sopwith Snipe. The drawing didn't show any
special arrangement to hold the steel plates togheter, so I guess they were
bolted or soldered togheter in some way and out of the pilot sight.
Outside, those plates may have been painted battleship gray, but I think
that in the inside they may have left the steel unpainted, so I agree with
you that a plain dark metallic hue may be appropiate for the flat sidewalls,
while the woden structure and panels may have been clear varnished as usual
with Sopwith practice.
