[WWI] Post-shading technique

Hi:

I am doing the Legato Hansa Brandenburg B.I kit.  I want to attempt some of 
the shading tricks that I have seen on some models, such as:

on Peter Plattner's Lloyd C.V - the ailerons and horizontal tail surfaces.

Any ides on how to create this effect?
