Hi Mike
This is from the Aredrome forum

The Nieuport 23c1 was a Nieuport 17c1 with several minor improvements, but what differenated the two machines was the Nieuport 23c1 had a cowl mounted Vickers machine posuitioned a few cm to the right of center.
They served along side the Nieuport 17c1 in all Escadrilles de Chasse in early 1917. They were replaced by the Nieuport 24c1 in mid 1917.

The Nieuport 23 was an improved version of the Nie 17. Internal fuslage changes forced the mounting of cowl mounted ( as in French service ) Vickers to be mounted slightly Starboard on the cowling. It had a 120 hp improved LeRhone ( basicily a 110 Hp with higher compression and Aluminum Pistons). I have also read that the air foil was slightly different too. The Nie.23 served along side Nieuport 24bis , 24 and 27. When the No. 1 Sqdn. RFC turned in there Nieuports in 1918 most were 27 and 1 Nie 23.

  Hi:

Looking at the profiles in my Nieuport Aces book last night, I could not
detect a difference betwen the Nieuport 17 and 23. What is the difference?

Michael
