Maybe, maybe not. You, Grumpy Shane of the 21st Century, are biased with a 
deep appreciation of the asthetics and/or technology. For Grumpy Shane of 
1917, it might have been just a job, and one that you didn't especially like 
anyway since you're such a grouch, so why would you bother. Otoh, if you 
really really hated it, doing any paint job that involved a lot of extra, 
un-necessary work might be something you would write home about, literally.
Which is far from disagreeing with your reasoned, overall skepticism of 
colorful British aircraft.
