Hi Ray,
Having tried most of the Humbrol ranges (authentics, Monogram-Humbrol and Humbrol Super Enamels), I think there have been variations in their formulations. In fact, the smell of the different ranges are not the same for authentics smell like kerosene-diluted or so, not like the newer Super enamels. I have tried the later ones at handpainting but I didn´t like the results: the pigment is thicker and dries too fast for me, this resulting in brush marks even although I diluted the paint with Humbrol´s thinner, but the paint regained its thickness in a few seconds.
When I tried Authentics they didn´t require any diluting even although the paints were really old, they remained thin enough however.
I think the older ones were formulated for brush painting and the later ones for airbrushing. Perhaps airbrushing is more forgiving in regards to paint quality; I have seen superb results from the poorest of Chinese paints when airbrushing (the secret is diluting), and awful ones from them when handpainting, while authentics allow the same finishing by hand or by airbrush. However, I´d rate the quality of a paint by the finishing it obtains at handpainting...

Originally Authentic Colours were introduced as sets in the 60's you could get German wwii colours etc. They came if I remember right in sets of 6. You could also buy theem singly. These were formulated to be accurate and thinner for better airbrushing an brush painting. However these paints were phased out recently and we have the older original general purpose range. These were always more for the brush painter and are a bit thicker. Now I dont usee Humbrol any more since they phased out the authentic colours. have the older range changed in formulation??
I always assumed they were the same as always and work well for brush painting?

Hi Neil,
I agree, the old Humbrol "authentic" range are the best paints I have tried.
I even have a 25 plus year old "HF6 chocolate" (a French color, I think) that is simply fantastic!, the pigment is incredibly fine. Perhaps they were more oily those days and while they may take longer to dry, you even can see how the brush strokes simply desappear...
