Michael and Doug, thanks for the input. That PE set looks really useful, so I'll get that even though it is more than twice the price of the kit :-)
The mid grey and upper grey are pretty close in most of the model photos, and you have to look closely to see the dividing lines. The upper color seems to be about F.S. 36495 and the lower about 36375 on the charts, but they look darker in model photos. My hull color is a bit warmer than 31136 and agrees with most photos.
I'd like to get more input on the boat color. In one of the wartime shots of Emden, the boats look definitely not white. I'm not sure when Emden got its grey, but it looks like a pretty complete job. It was stationed far from Germany when the war started and went right into action. My guess is it got painted in the Mariannas when it was given its mission from Admiral Spee. In the prewar photos, the yellow upper color looks dark, just like the yellow on Jasta 10 noses does with orthochromatic film, so it is pretty easy to tell the two schemes apart.
I'm convinced the screws looked bronze. Wouldn't an unpainted anchor rust?

                                                J.R. Boye
