Michael, as Ray Rimell profiles it in the "Richthofen" book, Manfred's D.III had 3-color camouflage on the upper wing surfaces and pale blue under the wings. This is based on Lt Simon's captured D.III. The left tips are light brunswick green, the right tips are olive and the center is dark venetian red. Fuselage, tail and everything else is red overpainted. The Albatros logo on the rudder is left exposed in a small rectangle of CDL.
The Revell pilot figure supplied with the D.III was the same undersized wretch found in the Camel and SPAD kits as I recall. The larger guy found in the D.VII, N.17, SE 5 and Dr.I kit was much more satisfactory. A third figure clutching his chest was included with the M-S N and DH 2. I think there was a fourth type used in the Sopwith Triplane, E.III and N.28 (with his legs cut off on that one). I can send you the Dr.I guy in red if you want him.
The first two OT kits I ever assembled were the Revell Albatros and the DH 2. My mom bought them for me to keep me busy when I was sick. The Albatros was first together because the DH 2 had all those loose struts to mess with. I remember them both very well...

Subject: [WWI] OOB Revell Albatros D.III

All this talk of OOB, I recently pulled out a Revell Red Albatros D.III and had a hair up my *** to build it straight out of the box, add some cockpit detail, thicken the rear fuselage a little (with the stand arm supplied, and basically keep it all the red colour of the plastic. I believe this scheme has been disproved by Lord Rimell, (Lt. blue bottom wings, camouflaged on top), but part of me wants to see the plane all red again like it was in my youthful days. I know he had an all red D.V(a). If I decide to camouflage the wings, are they two colour or three colour?
I've just recently had a thing for red aircraft, (especially Richthofen's), the more the better. Grouped together they have a look about them, and that red plastic of the Revell kit...Would be nice to have a minimal paint job. Any comments? Not that I might listen, but that model is sitting on my desk waiting. And it would be a quick build and one
more model out of the box and on the shelf...
