Our local vintage theater, the Stanford Theater, is presenting silent films with live organist 4 times this summer.
During the first event, I was surprised to learn about Vernon Castle and his service in the RFC, and people on this list found me some great sources about him (thanks!)
Well the third show (sandwiched between Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton) features two movies starring Reginald Denny. I had never seen any of his silent films, so I looked him up online (my wife actually looked him up first and told me I needed to check it out).
Mr. Denny not only also served in the RFC (112 Squadron, Home Defence on Pups and Camels) but he was a pioneering model builder-mostly balsa/RC. He built models for WWI movies as well as designing his own models and engines. Later in life, he opened a hobby shop in Los Angeles which he ran until he was in his 70s. He also designed target drones which were used by the U.S. Army and Navy. He lived his final years back in England.
Oh yeah, he was also an actor. His career was long and lasted well after the silent era. Unlike Vernon Castle, his fame came after his wartime flying. I'm looking forward to seeing this show.
