According to a Norwegian volunter on the German side was there freshly baked
bread most days with (ersatz) butter.
Hot meals were brought forward to the front even when they were under fire,
stews in various forms were common as they were easy to keep warm and hand out.
Gulaschkanone is still used in German for field kitchen.
