Yeah, I think Andy hit on something there. They got so much right,
why not just go a little further and make it as real as possible ?
I read the book on the making of the Battle of Britain movie. The
makers knew some technical things were wrong ( notably the re-engined Bf
1*9s ), but they TRIED HARD to make everything else as accurate as
possible. The story itself is the drama - along with a love interest to
focus the personal side - and it stands on its own because it is a
pivotal point in history. Tora Tora Tora is another example. Everything
is so well done, I don't mind the faked out Zeros.
And that's just it - there are enough great real stories associated
with the Lafayette, why not tell those ?
Look at movies like Seabiscuit, Ray, The Lost Battalion and The
Aviator - mostly factual movies can be great movies.
Where is the Rickenbacker movie ? The Voss movie ? Ball, Guynemer
or a dozen others ? Or redo the movies on Sgt. York, Edith Cavell and
Mata Hari ( can't take the kids to see that one ).
Saving Private Ryan showed what can be done. I'm spoiled now.

P.S. Did I see tanks escorting a refugee column in
Flyboys ?
