First: Blue Max featured several "SE5as" with sweepback? Why? Because these 
were converted Tiger Moths! I guess that some of these still fly and perhaps 
your artist picked up some reference pictures from the several "coffee 
table" books that portray colour pictures of modern repros instead of the 
real thingie.
And to be fair, most of the more renowned Av artists usually are dead 
serious on accuracy issues, knowing that the clients usually are very well 
informed buffs who want the thing as real as possible.
BTW one of the things that I don't liked about Blue Max was the fact that 
all German pilots used the same Uhlan uniform, and most of them also wore a 
30's British leather flying helmet, with ear pockets to hold the earphones.
