Most likely it would have been cut.  The structure around the door would have to be beefed up to carry the loads.  There is an STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) for an aeroplane I own for adding a door on the left side.  This consists of increasing the size of the tubing (metal structure in this case) and adding some additional braces.  To add a cabin to a WWI type, I would suspect that the loads wound be transferred to the door frame with appropriate bracing in a similar fashion.
