The Star was introduced May 19th, 1917, and lasted until February 8th, 1918. 
It was then replaced with the Cockade style insignia, which lasted until 
April 11, 1919, where it went back to the Star insignia. My reference is 
Elliot's Monogram US Navy and Marine Corps Aircraft Color Guide Volume 1.

For Stateside trainers, the star with red center still carried on through the 
period. I did a Jenny painting last year of a March Field machine and going 
through a stack of references a foot thick, it came down to photos, and 
generally through the summer of 1918, the star was more apt to be seen, but either 
one could be accurate depending on which exact airplane snaps ones garters.
