[WWI] an odd structural question

hi all,
Even though I've got an ot subject on the bench right
now, I'm being drawn back into OT subjects and am
planning my next one.
I'm interested, as most of you know, by WW1 aircraft
in post war civil use and have my sights set on an
interesting one, but have a structural question...
The aircraft I want to model is a two seat conversion
with an enclosed passenger compartment *with a
door*...
How would this have been accomplished? Would the top
longeron have been cut? Seems dangerous. If it was
indeed cut, what structural modifications might have
been made to the aircraft?
I know that this is slightly out of the realm of
thinking on the list, but can think of no other group
that has enough combined knowledge to make an
intelligent guess.
Thanks for entertaining the idea.
cheers, tracy
