Handpainted means just that - not necessarily freehand work but applied with
a brush to a chalked line rather than the perfect lines and edges we see
with computer cut vinyl masks.  

What I am trying to get at is that we need to think about avoiding the
absolute perfection of CAD generated drawings stencils and templates
especially when working I relatively large scales.    

The lack of true circularity is evident in many photos, especially where
markings have been repainted on fuselages, where the fabric has moved when
it has been laced and the markings painted over in the field.

Most tellingly - if markings were "often" hand painted we should have a 
photographic record which shows them "often" - yet I'm hard pressed to 
remember *one*<<
