[WWI] Albatros paint question.

There is some information, but much is debatable. The Smithsonian D.V.
uses a bluish-gray for the metal interior parts, and a deep green for the
cowling on "Stropp". There has been speculation that the color that became
"RLM 02" for the second world unpleasantness (SWU) was a standard primer in
WWI, so that is a possibility. Model Master II series has the RLM 02 in
their range. 34227 would be a bit brighter than the British SWU interior
primer (34226, roughly, and I believe I have the two straight). There is
not a problem I would think with any of these.

The speculation on RLM 02 was talked over on this board about 6 years ago,
and has since taken on a life of its own. Now you will see posts on
Hyperscale or reviews on Modeling Madness where it is taken as gospel
truth. It is really just a speculation that makes sense, but is not
proven. Make your own choice and dare anyone to offer proof that you are
not right.

The engine would have a steel colored block, with the cylinder 'collars'
being black. The intake pipes would probably be more of an old copper
color (where it has taken on a brownish, less metallic mottled look). The
exhausts would be a burnt iron/hot metal look that is not exactly rust
color -- I like to paint them a gun metal/bronze paint mix, then dry brush
them with oils in silver, pewter, Indian Red, and burnt umber shades. The
Testor's Metallizer series has a Burnt Iron non-buffing and Burnt Metal
Buffing Metallizer for a simpler solution. Don't forget to drill the
exhaust ends out, then they can be 'filled' with a wash of flat black. The
camshaft portions would be a lighter metallic aluminum, and the whole
engine would be liberally coated in a film of grease, oil, and attracted
dirt that the mechanics can only smear around more or less. On the
carburetor intake there is a little molded half-cylinder (or pair of them)
that can be painted brass colored.

Have fun!

> Hi all - I am rather new to the W.W.I modeling experience, but I've
decided to have a go at the Eduard 1/72 Albatros D.V kit. Before I get too
far along, I have a couple of painting questions for the experts here on
the list.
>
> 1) I prefer to use Model Master enamels. What would be the most correct
paint (or paint mix) for the greenish/grayish color used on the metal parts
of a D.V? The kit instructions say F.S. 34227 Pale Green but I am not sure
that is the right shade. Also, is the actual color that was used known or
only speculated at?

pipes? The kit instructions say it had a black engine, brass intake pipes,
and a rust colored exhaust.
