Matt

Not sure that mahogany is a good description of the desired finish. The
nearest description for me is old wooden school desks after a few terms hard
use.

There are good photos of the Brussels Nie.23 in the Datafile Special which
show the cockpit sides and top longeron in a quite reddish finished wood
while the seat is quite pale and more yellowish

I'd use a tan base for the cockpit sides and over paint with raw sienna for
the wood grain effect. Top off with 50/50 coat of Tamiya clear orange and
clear; add more thin coats until you like the effect.

The seat is best finished with a desert sand colour for the base and you
could add a **subtle** wood grain effect with raw sienna; again overcoat
with a slightly weaker mix of clear orange and clear- use a touch of clear
yellow if you want to differentiate the colour from that on the sides. The
varnish has worn off the seat bottom a little so you might want to dry=brush
this with a touch of plain desert yellow. ( I believe the restoration had a
black seat at one time)

The heel boards look darker and dirtier and the varnish is clearly scuffed
so that the gloss is pretty much gone. I'd just add a wash of medium grey
and matt varnish over the wood finish,

The Eduard instructions call for the cockpit sidewalls to be "mahogony".
What do people think? What colors would you paint the cockpit
sidewalls? If memory serves (I can't get to any of the links from here)
the Belgian Nie.23 - previously under restoration - was definitely a
darker wood in this area. What paints are close matches - out of the
bottle, preferrably - to mahogony?
