That's one of my favorites as well, especially since I can hear the
wind in the rigging every time I look at it.
The heraldic crest is a complete fabrication. Instead of trying to
research, document and get excited about markings for a model that
was already taking liberties with history, I decided to invent a
little of my own. Many years ago my great-grandfather registered a
private yachting burgee that has a white star on a dark green field.
My family still uses that flag, so I adopted it as an element for the
crest. The gryphon simply represents my son's name, Gryffin. Thus,
very literally, the crest reads "Gryffin Syme." His birthday is
January 14, hence the 01.14 on the side of the fuselage.
While potentially offensive to serious historians, I figured the
markings were well within the scope of what was done at the time.
