John , you are right , the Maybach engines are there , so a couple more
variations are possible .
The airship hanger at Moffett Field is actually vacant now because it
is coated with a material now considered hazardous . The city of Mountain
View is trying to get the Navy to "clean" it up . It is huge , so this
would be a major expense . Some have suggested sealing the whole thing up
with a safe coating : some want to cover it with solar panels . The Navy
has decided the best thing would be to tear it down and be done with the
problem .
Thankfully some here want to preserve it . It is the main landmark
here , visible from almost the whole Bay Area . I've been in it many
times , and it is amazing in its scale . How many real airship hangers
are left in the world ? I think there is one in Akron , but this one is
certainly worth hanging onto .
