Up untill WW1, official relations between the US and Great Britain were 
strained due to the various prior conflagorations.  In fact, I believe that 
up till that point, the British retained official plans to invade the US and 
re-take the colonies.  Naturally, at that point, such plans were more of a 
"What if?" and a remnant of prior instituional belief rather than a serious 
plan.
