thanks ernie! i'm up in washington state at the moment, but nowhere
near the northern border. however, we've had fireworks going for hours
every night since the first. must be a whole lotta canadians or wannabe
canadians in them thar woods celebratin' canada day!

my best guess for all the ruckus on the night of the second was that
folks with good taste and historical awareness were celebrating the
first zeppelin flight (over lake constance near friedrichshafen on july
2, 1900) --tho fireworks in the air seems a perhaps inauspicious way to
mark that particular memorable event). but who knew there were so many
zeppelin fans around? i guess maybe the more ignorant with access to
combustibles were merely marking the middle of the year, tho given local
demographics i suppose they might in fact have been partying over the
opening of the first wal-mart on this day in 1962.

as to the fireworks on the 3rd that have only finally stopped within the
last two hours, all i can imagine is that folks were gettin festive over
either the feast of saint thomas, or else the official beginning of the
dog days of summer. i can't imagine that there are enough immigrants in
this area to celebrate the national holiday of belarus, so maybe they
were just checking their fuses and making sure their powder was dry for
the party later this evening? there must be some americans who want to
save something for the fourth around here, right?
