Am I right in assuming that only RFC Nieuports would have received this
treatment? If the answer is yes it raises some questions.

Early British Nie. 16s were ordered for the RNAS but transferred to the RFC.
These were apparently delivered in standard French two tone upper surfaces
(as were some later RNAS Nie.11s and the RNAS "17B"s -A.K.A. Nieuport 21)

Would it be safe to assume these would have been delivered in standard
French colours including French under wing roundels with no roundels on the
top surface?

The RNAS didn’t seem too worried about whether the roundels were coloured-in
properly - as long as their machines were marked with roundels and not
crosses they seemed quite happy to use them.

The RFC of course might well have repainted the markings before they were
issued to the squadron, but given the pressing need for machines at the time
they may not have bothered.

Kennedy-Cochran-Patricks's 5172 (on p 22 of the DF special) looks to have a
standard French paint job, with no fuselage roundels; unfortunately the wing
roundels aren't clearly visible though the associated profile shows them as
RFC roundels
