[WWI] "Flyboys" movie

A friend went to the EAA fly-in in Oskosh. They had a couple of planes there that were specifically built for the movie. One was Fokker Dr. I the other was a Nieuport 28 in the Hat in Ring Squadron markings. The Dr. I was all red from back of cockpit forward and from back of cockpit white. It had a white, what looked like a raven, under the cockpit. 
Someone said they had thought it was loosely based on the Lafayette Esquadrille, but with the Hat in Ring markings I wonder if will have anything to do with Capt. Rickenbacker.
