I like the smushing method.
I usually start with a lighter brown or tan Matt desert tan for example, and
then using a higher gloss brown and "wrecked brush" I "smush" the paint over
top of the earlier colour, making sure to leave plenty of the base colour
showing through.  I continue to build layers until the right tone is
reached, sometimes going back to lighter shades.  I find this gives depth to
the colour.  I do find that this works best however when grain isn't
important.
