<< Some German troops were pulling the prop through on a Gotha, checking for 
hydro lock, then they all steped back and the engine started as if it had a 
starter. I didn't see anyone pull the prop to start it. >>

Some engines weren't pulled through to strart. The prop would be pulled 
around a certain number of times to suck in the right mixture, everybody would 
stand back and then the starting mag would be cranked like crazy and if all was 
right, the engine would fire up.
