The French "yellow-period" lasted approximately from 1916 to 1918. While the
Nieuport 17 (and its derivatives) usually were painted overall enduit
metallisé, the SPAD 7 was overall "yellow". This is not just plain
Clear Doped Linen, but fatty varnish in linseed oil was added between the coats
of the clear dope, resulting in an overall, "warm" yellow color. (References:
