I have an Imperial Airways Ltd passengers' 'Flying Map' of the London to Paris Route, albeit later than the Daimler Airways contribution to this route. Though I think you'll find La Ronde much more interesting. The Barker Biopic was much as we might expect. Hoary old footage, including Hell's Angels dog-fights, trotted out yet again. To the producers credit they have looked for and found some new footage - at least to this viewer - albeit only a couple of minutes worth. Best of the new footage are some Curtiss flying boats operated by Bishop and Barker from Toronto's waterfront in 1919. Unfortunately, there are too many talking heads who have little or no relevance to the story - a playwright and an actor! The latter, well known Canadian actor Eric Peterson, only possible connection is that he played Billy Bishop on the stage several years ago. The token historian S Wise, who co-authored the 'official' history of the RCAF a few years back and should know better, even talked about dropping challenges to meet in single combat like knights of old - Good Grief!!! Highlights were a few brief, pithy comments from Bishop's grandson - you could tell it was a Canadian production, the American's would have bleeped him several times. Barker's sister added some worthwhile family insights. Ranting over, the program was better than I expected. Barker's story was told well, with little or no glorification. Judicious use of still photographs, more of these and less irrelevant movies would have been good, helped tell the story often using Barker's own words. There were very few comments from contemporaries, though. Overall, there is little new here for the WW1 enthusiast. For a wider, less informed audience, at whom the program is clearly aimed, it will probably be well recieved. I found the post-war period (last 15 minutes) and Barker's early life and career (first 15 minutes) most interesting, as it was mostly all new to me. It ends on a typically, self-deprecating Canadian note... The club issued each year, a Year Book which contained a full list of then current members. I have the 1910 issue and can check this if you are looking for anyone specifically.
