Duke. R. E. Duke was educated at Tonbridge School and left in 1913. On 22/10/14 he was commissioned as a 2 Lt. (Temp.) in the 13th King's Royal Rifle Corps. He transferred to the Cyclist Corps on 16/2/15 and went to France where he was employed in the trenches with trench mortars and bombing. He was promoted to Lieut. (Temp.) on 20/7/15. He transferred to the RFC (on 13/5/16 ?) as an Observer and was placed on the General List on 23/8/16. By 9/3/17 he had qualified as a Pilot and for nine months he was a Testing Pilot at St.Omer before being posted to 84 Squadron. On 6/3/18 he was slightly wounded in an aerial combat and became a POW when he had to make a forced-landing as a result of engine trouble. He was repatriated on 14/1/19 (or 17/12/18). Robin Duke became a pilot with Daimler Airways Company and was killed in an aerial collision in fog over Thieuloy-St.Antoine, north of Beauvais on 7/4/22. (The source of the above information is "Tonbridge School and the Great War." This gives the repat date as 14/1/19, but Cox & Co.'s List says 17/12/18). So far as the incident on 6/3/18 was concerned, Duke was flying SE5a (A8946) and left Flez at 8am on an OP. Trevor Henshaw in "The Sky their Battlefield" says he was last seen west of Renansart at 9.40am going west at 12,000ft. He suggests that Duke may have been shot down by Leut. Rudolf Rienau, Jasta 19, who claimed a victory at St. Quentin on that day. (Renansart is about 16kms south-east of St.Quentin). "The S.E.5 File" by Ray Sturtivant & Gordon Page says that Duke was last seen in an engagement west of Revancourt at 9.40am and was brought down at Fort Mayot by Leut. Hans M.Pippart, Jasta 13. A brief search failed to locate Revancourt on the map, but Mayot is about 6kms south-west of Renansart.
