I do wonder if there is anything in the Hobart papers about air ops in Mespot. 'Armoured Crusader' does contain a photo of the burned out wrek of Tennant & Hobart's aircraft. I assume that 'From Blandford to Baghdad'is the Guy Warner booklet recently reviewed in the Journal ? I have a copy and, as far as I know, it is still available from Guy.I note a credit to someone called 'Peter Wright' in it, so perhaps he can give you an appraisal ? I have some info on the Mespot Half Flight which I will send you off-list (and anyone else who wants it). Nick Other sources include AJ Barker's 'The Bastard War' (snappy title) and the Official History (reprinted by Naval & Military). -----Original Message----- From: peter.lambert@us.army.mil [mailto:peter.lambert@us.army.mil] Sent: 04 March 2003 21:41 To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [CCI] Re: RFC/RAF in Mesopotamia >From all the WWI Aviation bibliography's that I have encountered, TEnnant's only book is In the Clouds Above Baghdad, and its reprint by Battery Press in the 1990s. One book I would love to see reprinted somehow is From Blandford to Baghdad. I have yet to see this in the antiquarian book market, and have not seen it in any of the libraries I have been to. "But Not in Anger" by Christopher Cole & Roderick Grant. Chapter1, "The Siege of Kut," deals with the airlift that valiantly attempted to drop food and supplies to the beleaguered troops at Kut-al-Amara. 2. "The Eye in the Air" by Peter Mead has a section on Mesopotamia, pp.120-125. He was flying as an observer with 4 Squadron in 1916 and as a pilot with 13 Squadron & 15 Squadron in 1917 as shown in the following extracts from Casualty Reports at the PRO. 1) 5 Mar 1916. BE2c (4307). 4 Squadron. Pilot: Capt GA Burney. Obs: 2 Lt HS Robertson. Both unhurt. At 10am when returning from a recce, the engine gave out at 2000ft. The pilot used pump, but the engine would not pick up. He then turned oil on in mistake for extra petrol and had to make a forced-landing at Argueves. After landing smoothly, the machine ran over a depression full of snow and was thrown on to her nose. The machine was wrecked and SOC. 2) 9 Apr 1916. BE2c (2608). 4 Squadron. Artillery Patrol. Pilot: Capt DE Stodart. Obs: 2 Lt HS Robertson. Both pilot and observer were injured and taken to 26th Field Ambulance Hospital at Baizieux following an accident at Baizieux aerodrome (presumably a take-off or landing crash). The machine was burnt and SOC. Following his injuries in April 1916, HS Robertson would seem to have returned to the UK for successful pilot training. (But could there have been two HS Robertsons in the RFC?!!). 3) 23 Apr 1917. BE2e (7089). 13 Squadron. Contact Patrol over 17th Corps area. Pilot: 2 Lt HS Robertson. Obs: Lt GJ Farmer. Both unhurt. Left at 6.44am. Brought down by machine gun fire from the ground. Landed 500yds north of Fampoux. The machine was heavily shelled and SOC. By November 1917, HS Robertson has been promoted to Temporary Captain and moved to 15 Squadron (presumably on his promotion). 4) 20 Nov 1917. RE8 (B5031). 15 Squadron. Contact Patrol. Pilot: Capt HS Robertson - wounded? Obs: 2 Lt WC Davey - DOW. Left 6.45am. Machine struck by shell at 7.15am. Forced-landing made at about 1000yds from the south-east corner of Havrincourt Wood. Machine damaged and sent to 2 AD. What did his initials HS stand for?
