I have come across references to aircraft manufacturing systems being set up
in Glasgow, Manchester and Coventry (amongst other places) during WW1 which
involved widespread subcontracting of parts to smaller companies. Possibly
this is the origin of the suggestion that George & Jobling made Camels ? I
wonder if any records of these companies' activities still exist ? Copies of
Flight etc are abound with adverts which give some information, and here are
a few from Janes 1919 :

John Dawson's, Victoria Works, Newcastle
Whitworth Engineering Co, High Road, North Finchley, London N12
Rudge-Whitworth Ltd, Coventry
Harris & Sheldon Ltd, Stafford St, Birmingham
Navarro Aviation Co Ltd, Burton-on-Trent
British Cellulose and Chemical Manufacturing Co Ltd, Sponden, Derby
BTH Co Ltd, Lower Ford Street, Coventry
James Talbot & Davison (1916) Ltd, Waveney Works, Freemantle Road, Lowestoft
ML Magneto Syndicate Ltd, Coventry
Callender's, Anchor Works, Leigh, Lancs
F Reddaway & Co Ltd, Pendleton, Manchester
Attwater & Sons, Hopwood Street Mills, Preston
J&E Dalton & Co Ltd, New Mills, Stockport

Can anyone provide any further information ?

Nick

Hi Nick

As a matter of interest, some time ago, I started a database of Aircraft &
Component Factories. Although I have a list of over 750 companies ( included

repeat names but different locations ) it is far from complete.

I can make the list available, to anyone if of interest, as extra
information
that is missing from my list, is always appreciated. The list is available
either in Excel or Works format.

Regards Martin

While looking for Biard's obit in the Times (Page 14e, 20 Jan 1966), I came
across that for Paul Bewsher (he of 'Green Balls', 'Bomibing of Bruges'
etc).

Bewsher's obit (Page 14 e, 19 Jan 1966) notes that he

Died aged 71
Educated at Colet Court London and St Paul's Prep School (of which his
father was headmaster for 40 years) and then at St Paul's School.

Served in RNAS in WW1
Joined Daily Mail as a reporter in 1920.

Obit didn't make Flight.

Nick, I know you don't think much of Longyard's 'Who's Who' book, but he
says that GHT was a newspaper publisher pre 1906 and he died in 1929.

Hi Nick

Would your friend care for his research to be made available to us all, via
the CCI web site?

It sounds interesting :-)

Andy
