Marthe Crockaert was a Belgian medical student from Westroosebeke who worked as a nurse/interpreter in a German Military Hospital in Roulers. She was recruited as a British agent early in the war and helped wounded POWs to escape and passed on intelligence. Published in 1932 (with a foreword by Churchill) the book had reached its 11th impression by late 1933. It is quite 'colourful' with drunken Germans, the shooting of civilians and even the 'obligatory' bayoneted baby ! I am interested to know how much of it is fact. First point for checking is a message sent about an ordnance train arriving on a Wednesday at 3 am and leaving at 3 pm. According to the book, the RFC sent a single aircraft to Roulers which bombed the train but was then shot down. The two crew died of injuries sustained in the crash. The date given seems to be pre March 1915, and I assume by the lack of references to Christmas 'under the grey wave' that it was later than December 1914. Does anyone have any comments ? Nick PS My first thought was about the liklihood of two crew being in an RFC bomber in early 1915 ! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jan 2003 18:07:51 -0000 From: "Tony Grange-Bennett" To: Subject: Re: Entertainers Message-ID: <000501c2c0ae$eb4f9920$b6259fd4@oemcomputer> Another name for the Entertainers' list.
