Shaw visted to watch them the night of Feb 3/4 1917 on his tour of the Front. Robert Gregory played a maid. Shaw said it was so cold he woke up in the morning and found his moeny frozen to the bureau. While Gregory was a painter, in fact he was the National Portraitist of Ireland, his mother was Lady Gregory of the Abbey theatre, Dublin. Funny thing is I know a lot of Shaw scholars and they spent about a year trying to establish the date GBS stayed in Sqn 40; they never thought to read Win Loraine's biography, because it was about aviation as well as theatre, but the date is right there in a footnote! The site was easy to find being near the famous well tended monument to Karl Marx. Unfortunately the site had not been maintained and many of the headstones were laying face down in the undergrowth and impossible to identify, a sorry looking site or sight indeed.
