I use this for all my complex camo patterns. Paper Masks Several vendors provide pre-cut masks for doing camouflage schemes that are quite simple to use. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive. Here is a technique you can use to make your own and save some money to buy that resin detail set! First you must convert the painting pattern provided for in the instructions into the correct size for your model. At first this may seem difficult, but it is really quite easy. I enlarged on my scanner the painting pattern provided on the instruction sheet for the side views by 325%, and the top view by 195% to the correct size. You can also do this on most copy machines. After printing out the correct sized drawings I then used Tombo Mono Multi Liquid Glue to coat the backside of the cutout masks. This is really a great product for paper masks. The adhesive (when dry) will not pull up paint but is fairly tacky so you can use paper masks around curves. I then cut out the outlines with a pair of scissors and voila, instant masks that are cheap! Some modelers will use a bit of tape or thread to raise the edges of the mask slightly to provide a slightly feathered edge, but I am just careful and only press the mask down in the center leaving the edges free. Careful airbrushing is the key to using paper masks. Use as little air pressure as possible with the smallest volume of paint that will work on your airbrush. Also, airbrush at a 90-degree angle to the masks. This will prevent over spray from penetrating under the masks leaving an undesirable "shadow". I used paper masks to airbrush the topside camo pattern with Humbrol Green (#116). Miracle Modeling Tip I know you all read my previous article on the C46, right? Well, I know that most of you didn't since it was a "boring" cargo plane so I'll repeat the following tip. While examining the paint finish for flaws, I noted some of the paint had over sprayed onto the adjacent color. It was time for a miracle-modeling product (not really!) that you can use to "erase" minor over spray. A simple vinyl eraser is the cure! I used Sanford's Magic Rub (#1954) but any vinyl-based eraser will work. Do not use a rubber-based eraser, as they are far too abrasive. I simply "erased" all the over spray. Look at the pictures, it really does work! Lucky dog! i'm still thinking on how to do it with the scalloped wing.... maybe making new ones will be easier than replacing the trailing edge alone and restore the rib positions. I *think* (I'm without my references, now) you can get away with just sanding the scallops away (as I *think* they were wire additions to the "regular", N wing). I was trying to send you detailed answer, but not from my own comp, and it turned out that I failed (I don't know why). Now I see that Bob answered you very clearly and ultimately. I have only one different opinion than he - I like the macro lenses. I have Micro-Nikkor 105mm for one year and I really love this lens (I worked a lot with the extension rings and bellows a lot before and the macro lens is really very usefull, although I use it mostly for the field photography of the plants and insects). All Bob wrote about the close-up lenses attached to the normal lens is true, the "true" macro lens is better in quality of picture and easier to use, but off course definitely more expensive. But you guys in the US have the lowest prices for the photo equipment in the World, and one of the highest incomes, so I think that the macro lens is fairly easily affordable. Cheers!
