Buy a lovely kit like the new Special Hobby SPAD. You'll still have French, but it won't be a Nieuport (which I personally feel are lovely planes), and the detailing won't be quite so tight. But it ain't black. It's a very pale greyish-pinkish-yellowish... you get the picture. Call this "ot" if you like, but I think it will shed some light on the subject. Find Tommy Milton's Miller Indy winner, should be 1923. Look at the tires, the old Firestone Balloons. They are virtually white - and this is in the early Twenties. Your WWI rubber should be pale.
