About the judges dropping a model. I think this is an awful thing to happen, and really unecessary. At our nat's we rarely pick up models during judging. I never do, I occasionally carefully push up a wing, but that's it, for me. And to be honest, I'd be rather pissed off if even a judge lifted one of my models. On some of them (the DH4 in particular) there is nowhere to grip them without something coming off. And knowing how little most of our judges know about WW1 models, I don't trust them. Also, what reason is there to look closely beneath a model, the only reason would be to look for mistakes, which is something done too much at contests already. If a model looks good sitting on the table it is good, and if the modeller wants to show off the underside, then that is possible with mirrors, photos, or even a stand. Thats what I think! /Neil C. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 07:03:55 -0600 (CST) From: tbittners@sprintmail.com (Matt Bittner) To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: zzzzzz Message-ID: <200303101303.h2AD3tr65909@king1.kingsnake.com> > Hadn't forgotten you Matt, you are usually about 10 minutes after D. I think I mounted it too far forward. of course, it has to be forward of the window but still. I also think that the shelf needs to extend further back and the kit piece doesn't seem to do that. I scratchbuilt the interior on a Revell SE5a and somehow that seemed easier or at least, less messy. The Roden kit also gives you only the front part of the Vickers and there's nothing t poke through the port side of the instrument panel. I got the results re my humble foray to Model Expo 03. As I had heard the Pfalz didn't place. The judges found a very small white glue splodge next to one piece of rigging where I had done a very quick fix to a wayward piece of rigging just before I top coated it. I just forgot to clean it off as I was in a big rush to get it done. This knocked me down in the scoring for finishing which needed to be more consistent. However, A lot of people said they liked it and I feel good about that. Best in Show and Best Australian Subject in Show came from my category, so as I said the competition was a bit tough. The surprise was the Albatros D-V (in my gallery) which I took along on a whim. I talked to one of the category judges after the show in the carpark and it was very close to getting a commendation (4th in category) which surprised me no end. I knew it had been okay cos it got very positive remarks on the judging sheet. Congratulations to my clubmate Nick Gordic who collected the following swag: 1st: 1/72 OOB - Eduard Fokker Dr-1 2nd 1/47-1/32 Enhanced - Hobbycraft Nieuport XVII (Billy B); 3rd 1/48 Modified - Eduard Albatros D-II 3rd 1/72 Enhanced - Eduard Albatros D-Va Profi Unfortunately Nick doesn't have a computer at home otherwise I would certainly lure him onto this list. I will have some pics soon of his models if anyone's interested. The swap and sell got me a swag of Golden Age thingies including an Airfix HP 42 - the classic twenties/thirties airliner (yes I know its ot but it is the ultimate airliner for me {and Parker} Anyways it was good fn and I shall be back next year.... Yes, I think these things should not happen but I wouldn't kill the judge for it, (but I'd be quite upset of course). After all he's only human and accidents and mistakes happen. The situation was the typical thing described by Dave: the model was on a base, unglued onto it, (I don't know if there was or wasn't any mention of that fact on the entry form) and the judge lifted the base to inspect below and the model slipped off. I wouldn't want to be on that guy's shoes for any gold in the world.... But as Neil says there are ways of checking without touching....If I was judging I woulnd't touch...But I never judged and I don't want to. I really appreciate the effort of those guys even if sometimes I find their criteria hard to understand.. Pedro P.S.
