However I *think* there may be a colour pic of one amongst the more prevalent Biff pics which is some compensation. Incidentally, Rimell et al. get on my wick with this "67 (Australian), later No. 1 Squadron AFC" bollocks. The first AFC squadron was raised in Australia *as* 1AFC Squadron, but the RFC called it 67(Australian) Squadron to avoid possible confusion in the supply chain with 1RFC. Doing it Rimells way makes it look like the AFC was formed out of the RFC, when in fact it was formed *before* WW1 Surviving accounts by members of the squadron reveal that they were not happy about it and only used the 67Sqn title when they had to. Personally I expect that if the squadron (in the early days) hadn't had so many British personel drafted in to provide necessary experience and training they'd have been told to take a hike (only not so politely ;-) Shane ******************************** My Strine is a Toad in Disguise ******************************** _________________________________________________________________ MSN Instant Messenger now available on Australian mobile phones. Go to http://ninemsn.com.au/mobilecentral/hotmail_messenger.asp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 22:32:18 +0100 From: "Alberto Casirati" To: "WW1 Modeling List" Subject: Re: help with Windsock Jan.03 Message-ID: <000c01c2d92b$572d4180$d3ef22d4@s> Thanks very much to all those who answered my question: I had forgotten that letter, as it was written some time ago ! Took something like 10 stitches to fix the gashes on his feet and calves before the bandicoot ripped out the side of the bag and ran for cover :-) Saw a US Marine run from an almost domesticated one too, but that wasn't nearly as funny because he'd been asleep and didn't have a clue what nibbled him - for all he knew a snake was attacking. They > were looking at my Pfalz and one asked me what I get out of building models. > What does everyone else think about this question? Many things. In no particular order, these are: - the old saw, it's holding history in your hands. I love researching history and my modelling is always of historical subjects, either from some conflict (which unfortunately is the way that most of our history has been shaped) or other historical events. That's why I prefer WWI, Napoleonic and WWII modelling over (say) making models of current production motor cars. - there is something I find exciting about virtually any model, either mine or someone else's. Don't know where that comes from, but if I see a model of anything anywhere I like to stop, look and admire. I went to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard with my son today and there is a new exhibit about Trafalgar. In it there is a superb new diorama of a British warship being launched in the 1780's. The ship is going down the slipway and the dockyard is modelled, including hundreds of figures in about 40mm scale (custom made I think). This thing just enthralled me and I could have looked at it for hours. I guess it's back to point 1, making the scene "come alive" for me. I used to love the IWM about 35 years ago when it was chock full of models - I particularly remember the diorama of the Gallipoli landings from the Clyde. They're pretty much all gone now, hidden in some storage room, as models are now deemed boring I guess. - I enjoy the creative side of model making, in particular I enjoy painting and finishing the model (I'm more on the artistic rather than engineering side). I never got any real art training although I loved painting and drawing as a child, so I think this is where that "urge" goes. Making a model for me is easier than say doing a painting (I couldn't anyway) because somebody gives me the bits in a box, but it gives me a similar creative pleasure (I guess). BTW, I count scratchbuilding as "real" art, as opposed to making models where someone gives you a nice headstart (scratchbuilding is way beyond my capabilities!). - yes, it's sometimes relaxing and is definitely a break from the day job! - you get to meet nice folks with similar interests, like the folks on this list and in modelling clubs. And apart from that I got hooked as a kid by Airfix kits and it grew from there. I blame those evil folks at Airfix for hanging round the school gates giving me that early fix.....
