Open the box, he said, it won't bite. Ah, the crisp, moulding, the lovely decals, no flash, no making your own struts. I push it away but was drawn back. I placed it near me while teaching the class but was distracted. (Yes, all F-4's were purple. Don't bother me kid) The box was opened again, and again and again. It is now sitting on the modelling table. What a beautiful kit. And I keeping hearing, "you are off on Wednesday, one day build, one day build". But I promised no more one day builds, I protest. "But think how nice it will look next to the Merlin kit you built 10 years ago. And a Datafile to go along with it." But, But..... "One day build, one day build." I run to Tech Support for support and she says, sure, I will write the code. No support there. What to do, what to do. Should I or shouldn't I. That is the question. All kidding aside, this is one beautiful kit. I've never paid this much for a kit but the moulding is crisp, the corrugations are excellent. There is a complete engine, decals for 2 planes, one with early crosses, one with late crosses. It screams, build me now. Just from looking at the kit, even with advanced AMS, this is a 10 hour build at the most. I highly recommend this kit. Gotta tell ya, cruising through warm places in the dead of winter is the way to go if one wants little snippets of introduction to many places--getting there was more than half the fun. I've always been an independent sort when traveling, but floating around on a ship with 2000 of your closest friends has something to be said for it. A few observations: First, and most importantly, there is absolutely nothing OT in the West Indies--though I did see a fleet of DC-3s parked at the San Juan, Puerto Rico airport. But I managed to find something to vaguely keep this message legal: bought a hand-carved biplane made from a single wooden matchstick. The wingspan is 6mm and no, the engine doesn't have spark plugs. Cute little thing, tho... Highlights: visited 10 different islands in 14 days (if it's Tuesday, it must be Tortola type of trip)...quite a lot of differences among them but all have palm trees and to-die-for beaches. Went snorkling several times which was great fun, and also tried scuba diving: a quick-and-dirty lecture on what to do and not to do, then strapped on a weight belt (like I really need more weight!), was cinched into a jacket with the scuba tank on the back and waddled into the water with two other daring souls and an instructor. After about 10 minutes of practicing breathing, I was down among the fishes. What a thrill! This is something I've always wanted to do but thought I was too old and out of shape to try it. I'm not about to sign up for a full certification course, but it was fun and a challenge that I met and conquered. Wish I were 30 years younger...Saw several sperm whales spouting and doing whaley things--closest encounter was about 50 feet from the boat we were on. Apparently there's a resident population of these awesome animals near some deep water trenches in the eastern Caribbean. Took a 4 hour, 30 mile excursion around the island of St. Kitts on a revived sugar cane train--me and four other passengers on a three car, diesel-pulled, narrow gauge (30 inches) train of double-deck coaches with open tops, traveled with two stewardesses serving endless drinks and munchies, a very British-speaking young lady giving a running commentary who also waved hello to everyone we passed including her mother, the five-person St. Kitts Scenic Railroad Choral Society singing gospel hymns, the president and CEO of SKSR sitting in the rear and grinning like a kid with a new toy, and an armed guard. Don't believe they made any profit on this run, but it was worth every penny (I'm a closet train buff and try to ride a train in any country I visit that has them). Added five new countries to my Lifetime Country List for a total of 45. And ate far, far, far too much ship food--but Lordy, it was soooooo good! But all good things have to end. Now back to house stuff, model stuff, and the rest of the real world. Model show season starts here in three weeks: have to do a few quick weekend builds... Given that there will probably be 3 versions of the Roden kit, he wants to know which, if any, version of the SE5a is appropriate for that scheme. Anyone know of such a scheme and is it Wolsey or Viper? Lile Dennis I am fascinated by the Junkers D.I, now in the Profipack version. It includes the usual PE fret for control column, valve rocker arms ( grgss...sorry, but I don't know it better in english....), seatbelts and Parabellum parts. Decals are for four variants. Two lozenge covered (fuselage) machines, the 586/18 and 596/18, 586 in green/mauve, 596 in plain green. And there is J 101/17 with Eiserne Kreuze, shown in a orange brown over all which I can't identify, even with the Datafile's help. At last there is J 134/17 with orange brown fuselage and green wings. Marked with a white A on the fuselage, belonging to FA(A) 263. As Dennis already stated: Perfect. There are NO express masks in the Profipack version, but I ordered them because I suspected this. I am not sure if I will use them, but I remind these days when I had trouble with decals on Ju52's. And I got Fokker E.III Profipack. Oh boy, this fullfills my dreams of 1985.... Large PE fret with anything you can imagine, perfect spoked wheels. Instruments printed on clear film. Decals for 4 versions: Udet 105/15, Sachsenberg's LF 196, Buddecke in Turkey, Banfield's A6 in Austria. And: Decals for the lacing! With extra length for other Fokkers! This little gem makes a AMS sufferer happy.... Hans P.S. The Eduard direct mail service was perfect. I ordered Monday, the parcel reached me Friday. ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 4994 **********************
