Message-ID: <008301c2cd6b$3731cac0$2272fea9@theshann> Considering the nature of the ancient Chinese language, with many dialects, and the nature of the 'ch' and 't' and 'd' sounds in most languages, probably the pronounciation depended on whether you asked the people on the north or south bank of the river as to whether it was 'chai' or 'tea'. In Russian it is '(t)chai' - the (t)ch is prounounced the same as 'Tchaikovsky', but is often transliterated without the 't'. In Japanese it is 'cha'. And 'Khaki' covers a wide range of 'dun' colors - essentially similar to if you took all the variants of 'olive drab' and added white or light gray. An ot note is that the British troops in the Zulu and later the Boer wars dyed the cloth covers of their topees and white cross-belts with tea in order to get a color that would blend in and match the new wave toward Khaki Drab field uniforms. Remember, we have also seen PC-10 described as 'dark khaki' as well as 'chocolate' in color (OT point to bring back sanity) .Mark. ----- Original Message ----- From: "SSH" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Wednesday, February 05, 2003 4:25 PM Subject: [WWI] Re: What color is "Khaki"? > Pedro, Michael, > I think the word Chai came to India and the western world from > China. > Interestingly, the word tea also originates in China, and probably > closely related to chai. > back to OT: > Perchance, the Voss cowl was chai coloured ? > > > ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2003 10:07:43 +1100 (EST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Shane=20Weier?= To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: all nuts here! In Portugal there is no Future or Kleer. Some years ago I wrote Johnsons here in Portugal, asking what would they have here similar to Future. The answer was protect 100 (not available to the general public then - sold for office cleaning companies in 5 lt cans) or something other (I really can't remember it was probably more than 10 years ago. At the time I bought a bottle of another brand of acrylic floor wax but it really did not fit the description I had of future. It was milky white not transparent. I used it a coule of times to coat canopies (this was when my models had enclosed cockpits...) though and I came to the conclusion that it worked. Once dry the milkyness disappeared. Then I went to London on holidays and bought a bottle of Kleer (much to my wife's bewildrement...). I've been using it since. It's a lot more than 10 years old. It's getting a bit thick and slightly milky too. I need to replace it. Still there is no transparent stuff like future/Kleer on the market here. Does anyone from non future/kleer countries use the milky types? Care to share experiences? This is what the Australian equivalent of Future (according to Johnsons) looked like. (Actually, it looks *exactly* like Aeromaster or Floquil clear gloss acrylics) Aside from the milkiness it has similar properties to the genuine Future I've had sent to me by listees with two exceptions. I think it's *tougher* because it's utterly unaffected by the likes of microsol, whereas Future will go all cloudy if you aren't carefull. It dries faster and can be overcoated with impunity much earlier. FWIW Johnsons Wax have now entirely discontinued the product in Australia citing insufficient demand, so local modellers are all scurrying about looking for alternatives. I like them both - just choose my weapon to fit the requirement Shane ******************************** My Strine is a Toad in Disguise ******************************** _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. My husband was brutally killed when he led the operation to capture the capital city, Freetown. The government has been after my family ever since. Everything owned by my husband was destroyed and assets confiscated. My life and that of my three children are not spared and we have to run away into Ivory Coast for the safety of our life where we presently live as refugees. I have in my possession documents containing details of my husband’s transactions on behalf of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) which he was the Army Chief. US$32Million (Thirty-two Million United States Dollars Only) meant for the purchase of weapons and other military hardwares was deposited by him in the vault of one Security Company with no names used except Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) and Certificate of Deposit which was used to secure the money. Top officials of the RUF cannot trace this money because no names were used in depositing it. I need a reliable and trustworthy foreign investor to entrust with the PIN and the CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT to enable him remove the funds from the Security Company and help us in the investment of the funds. Me and my children intend to travel overseas to start a fresh life and settle finally. If you are capable of assisting us in realising this investment, write me for more information. First, let me say that an airbrush is not a possibility at this pint. I'm using a combination of Ceramcoat acrylic, MM acrylic, and Polly Scale acrylic all mixed withFuture. I've just recently purchased new sable brushes, and I always work to a wet edge, but I'm still getting major "streaky" brush strokes in my finish, and it seems like it can take up to 5 or 6 coats until the color is opaque enough to eliminate the "show-through" of the primer below. I'm not real scientific when it comes to mixing the Future and the acrylic paints, so maybe I'm adding too much Future. I think I try to mix aout a 1:1 ratio - at least that's what I try for. How about drying time between coats?...no less than 1 hour is what I have done in a pinch, usually however, I let fresh paint cure overnight. Any other thoughts? It just seems that it should take 2 or 3 coats at max to cover. BTW, I'm working on two Nieuports...a 1/48 Eduard N.II, and a Toko 1/72 N.16. Thanks in advance. john ernst ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Feb 2003 22:34:02 -0600 From: "David's Mail Lists" To: Subject: Re: They're baaaackk Message-ID: <000601c2cd98$fa2113b0$0100a8c0@Jeanne> Check out the Dragon Web Page: http://www.dragon-models.com/html/dragon.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Feb 2003 21:28:27 -0800 From: "Bob Pearson" To: ww1 mailing list Subject: DWC - Pics Message-ID: <104450931501@smtp-1.vancouver.ipapp.com> Hi all, Another 10 shots of the DWC are now posted at http://www.cbrnp.com/RNP/DWC.htm I was sent a pile of photos of the Liberty engine, so I should be able to start on that shortly. .. and then it is time to worry about covering and attaching all the components.
