Which is right? If you are referring to what one sees from inside the cockpit, modeler's POV, the stitching is a dead give-away: CDL. It's fabric. Mark's 3D work, listed on site has frame studies of this. If you are referring to under fuselage color, it is 'typically' PC-10 or PC-12 (later). The wings and stab were CDL, under. This is out of SE 5a Sq. df special. I'd like to know what that bit under the engine panel, below the manifold & pipe is: sheet, wood or fabric (The section that gathers to the nose, side, lower). hth. Otherwise the decal strips get lots of little kinks at 90 degrees to the strip." This is very true, but it can also serve as a simulation of the stitching visible *under* the tape - a common enough sight on many planes. My biggest problem has been getting a consistent series of these kinks: I have had the most success when I painted my own decal strip, then sliced it with the point of a number 11 blade. This induces a curve to the strip and the paint kinks along the inside of the curve. Upon soaking the stip in water, it straightens back out, but now sporting those tiny kinks. I know this sounds a little masochistic, but if one is making the tapes anyway, why not get the stitches, too? Then a judge can look at the hard work and say: "Pity he couldn't get his rib tape smooth." I'm shutting up now... That was a fantastic find and purchase. I am envious. It almost makes me want to hop in my car and drive from Sandy Eggo, CA to New Mexico! I have an acquaintance lady, in her 70s, who just lost her husband. She said he left a collection of hundreds of plastic model airplane kits in a spare room in their house. She doesn't know what to do with them, and hasn't really grieved enough to let them go. He never built any; he just bought the kits and looked at them. What makes this really interesting is that when he worked, he traveled all over the world. Where ever he would go, he would stop in the local hobby shops and buy kits. Plus he would just buy locally in San Diego. I would love to just look at his collection. His wife doesn't want them, but she doesn't want to just throw them out either. I tried to tell her that I would help her sell them off, either through friends, ebay, or take her to a local plastic model swapmeet that happens monthly; she just isn't ready to let go. Maybe someday she will do something. I am not such a good friend that she will call me when she decides. I suspect that when she does decide, she will simply take a first offer from who ever is there to get rid of the lot. :( for everybody. You do have your work cut out for you. I am new to the list too. Yes, I went into the only hobby shop worth a hoot here in Albuquerque, to get some cleaner for my new Iwata airbrush. (Thanks to somebody mentioning the Iwata on this list.) Of course, I went through the usual aisles looking for something new and rare, and as usual found nothing I can't find on the web. In the back of my mind, I became somewhat aware that the shop was kind of messy. Not kind of. Really a mess. Why was this. Then, I noticed a 1:72 Meikraft Caproni Ca.3 sitting in a stack within a row of old model boxes on the counter. $6.00. Whoa. Well. Then I saw a 1:48 Eduard Albatross C.III. Box looked like hell, but well it was marked $28.00. Then a 1:48 Blue Max Junkers J-9/D-1 marked $20.00.Then the lady told me a story. All these are half-price of what is marked. Then I really got interested. She told me this guy (not an old guy, but < 40 years old), huge guy, had just died. He obviously had OCD because there were at least 500 models stacked all around the counter and shop, and this shop had bought 1/4 of his model kits in the estate sale. And they weren't through marking the collection in the back room. This means the guy had about 2500 kits, unbuilt, in his house. He hadn't built any of them. Just bought them for over 30 years. All eras. I was only interested in the WWI, which I am now glad there were only about 20 or 30, or I would have had to take out a loan. Jeez he had ships, tanks, planes, men, commercial passenger planes (blech). I couldn't go through it all. But I did grab every WWI airplane, and two tanks, that I found. Resin and Vac, but mostly 1:48 scale, which I will not build, until I finish all 1:72 on the planet. I am going back tomorrow to carefully comb through the boxes of vac kits, and look at the rest of what they have which they plan to put on the floor from the "back room". What an amazing thing. Yes you should try to talk your friend into letting you buy the whole lot. I'm sure you could find lots of people who want them. It would be fun to just go look at them all, as you said. Say, you belong to a good group (Caribou drivers). Anyone who served their country deserves a heartfelt round of applause, and much gratitude. Take care. Welcome aboard Nick. I like to see more free flight modelers join the list. I still am not sure how ya'll can work so hard on a model and then launch it into the air. Yikes!!! Later! Message-ID: Good Afternoon All, Just coming up from deep lurk to let everyone know that I'm still alive!! Got bumped from the list just before Thanksgiving, and didn't get around to resubbing until today. Four more classes left in the Masters program...should finish up by July/August (thank god)! I wonder what it'll be like to resume a "normal" life again (normal being a relative term)?! The good news is I'm maintaining a 4.0 average, the bad news is that the Pfalz, DVII, and DVa are all sitting on the bench unattended. The modeling bug has bitten quite hard a time or two, but had to resist the tempation to scratch that itch for fear of conflicting with my studies. Gets damn hard to avoid sometimes, so maybe I'll get at it again during this next class. Having only been peering at the archives on occassion, so I haven't kept in touch with any of the latest...have we determined the true color of Voss's cowl, the correct application of pink and blue rib tapes, where Vegamite really comes from...and has it been proven that Michael K's evil twin is actually masquerading as Herr Bittner??? Didn't recieve anything of OT value from the fat guy in the red suit (C02 system last year)...unless you can call a variable speed Dremel OT. It was purchased for use around the house, but it has already migrated to the bench, and is poised ready to thin down some sidewalls. Good to see we've got a whole slew of new modelers on the list...the talent pool just continues to grow. As I surf through the archives I'm amazed at the work you guys continue to turn out! So...just a quick note to say "Hi" and to let you all know I'm still alive, resubbed and in the listen mode! /R/ Greg Balzer ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 19:35:05 +0000 From: "Michael Kendix" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: Contact! Mine is a 2-speed Minimite and is easily one of the best purchases I've made. I haven't tried it for household stuff though:).
