I wouldn't say to the extent of "flame wars" as happen with some well-known personalities in another forum, but on another level apart from our usual cameraderie. AFAIK, the Naglo seems to be D's particular OT affectation and you are certainly well informed about cane toads! I don't have any books on Mick Mannock. From having read and heard a little here and there, I have the idea that he was a highly motivated, if somewhat unorthodox, pilot that enjoyed some success. I'm sure some other listees can tell you a lot more about him than I can. Perhaps Neil will expand on the subject? Nalgo: This is D.'s baby. I've only seen a photo of the quadraplane in Gray & Thetford, I think. It looked about as good as it flew (did it?). 6. Cane Toads: I love them. Such multifarious creatures, even the poets wax lyrical about them. They often offer the only entertainment on an otherwise mundane list day. 7. Added. Scale Wars: I have kits in progress in most every scale from 1:72 through 1:12 and I have a Sram Zeppelin Staaken R.VI in 1:144 that I might do someday. It used to be a lot of fun picking on what I thought were the "teeny" scale diehards. Then I discovered what hypocrites they were, in that they had dabbled in the larger stuff and even had some in their stash. It's not nice to poke fun at people that just can't help themselves when it comes to telling the truth right up front! Peronally, I prefer the sand wedge style, because you get better loft and can sometimes sling a toad right on their roof - or better still, into the guttering. Sometimes this leads to harsh words as formerly friendly neighbours feud over the numbers of dead and festering toads lying against the walls of their homes. Not, I might add, that they mind the dead toads. The issue is the *score* Being such competetive folk we can't help scoring, the winner being the one with the least dead toads in his yard. Neighborhood folks here only keep score of how many rules and restrictions they can enforce thru the "homeowner's association". Glad I'm finally leaving. Oz is out I'm afraid. Visions of a well hit toad bouncing off MiLs head knocking her into the pool and landing on the barbie. LOL My *last* word on Toads coming up.... *Many* years ago I worked shifts at the Australian Army's main HF Radio receiver station for this area at a place called Greenbank, then on the outskirst of Brisbane. It was an area of grass about 1 mile square inside the main training area, which was the usual rather dry Aussie bush - Eucalypt forest. The grassy (waste high) area was our antenna field, at the centre was the receiver station in a fenced compound where we watered and mowed the lawn, painted rocks (usual army crap!) During Christmas I was in charge of weekend night shift with two sigs and an apprentice. There was sod-all to do because the Army was all on leave except us :-( so the apprentice wandered outside to hunt toads with a golf club. I hid in my office and would usually be reading or modelling. About 2am I hear yelling outside, then ye apprentice comes crashing inside yelling "FIRE" A wide swathe of the antenna paddock outside the compound was on fire. The four of us started the fire pump, ran hoses and stopped the fire *just* before it spread beyond teh range of the hoses. You know how it started? The ****ing apprentice was bored with just hitting toads, and the cruel little prat took out a small can of turpentine with which he set a couple on fire. Not satisfied with that the next one was whacked with the club, forming a fiery toad comet......over the fence into the long dead grass. He spent the next two weeks confined to barracks. *I* got a kick in the backside because I didn't set off the fire alarm. 'sfunny *now* Shane (same little sod threw up over me on his 18th birthday. I had forgotten the black outlines around the camo patches. I also got the exhaust on the wrong side too, but didn't correct that. sp ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2003 00:17:38 -0500 From: RadspadMike@netscape.net To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: C-M Lohner Mickl/Oeffag Type R1 Kit Message-ID: <1D2EACF3.740D5F61.3E0364A1@netscape.net> Ive just received the Choroszy Modelbud Lohner Mickl/Oeffag Type R1 (1:72) resin kit from Karaya. I am very grateful that the list provided info on the aircraft dimensions that convinced me that, even in 1:72, this was not too small for me to attempt (I still have an Airfix Sopwith Pup waiting for the wings to be mounted). The fuselage is a little over 6 翻 inches long and the upper wingspan is a little over 9 翻 inches, not a small aircraft, crewing three. The fuselage is roughly the same length as that of the 1:48 Macchi M.5. The fuselage is in two pieces, separated in a vertical line along the centerline. There are two openings, a circular one in front for a gunner and a more lateral one behind it for the other two crew members. Some interior cockpit framework is molded in, including two box-like pieces of equipment. A floor supports a seat for the gunner in the forward position and a control column and rudder controls for the pilot. A molded instrument panel is mounted on a frame-like bulkhead between the gunner and pilot and navigator. A bulkhead supports two side-by-side seats for the pilot and navigator/bombardier? I ask because there are bomb racks mounted on the left and right outside fuselage in line with the two seats, each holding two bombs. The engine, a 350 hp Austro-Daimler V12, is mounted as a pusher on the centerline of the aircraft on struts between the wings, and is in 4 parts, two banks of six cylinders, a crankcase and a truncated conical piece (part of the crankcase?) to which the two-bladed propeller is mounted. The subdued rib detail looks good me and strut mounting positions are lightly indicated. Tail surfaces appear to be equally well done. The engine-mounting and wing struts appear to be useable after removing the flash, but Strutz or Contrail will work if they arent. Two underwing floats with mounting struts are also provided. No rigging details are provided. I should be able to find something in the k.u.k. Seeflieger book that will help. Also provided are parts to make a beaching gear two-wheeled dolly and a sawhorse for the tail. And too, decals are provided to mark the aircraft as shown in the Choroszy profile. A piece of clear plastic is included . . . I dont know its use yet. The box image and the drawings do not show a windshield. Care will have to be taken in removing the small parts from their casting blocks and flash, but they seem to be well done. All parts come in about ten re-sealable baggies, so nothing is left to be rattling around and become lost except the decal sheet and the piece of clear plastic. I am looking forward to doing this kit. It is all resin, no PE nor white metal parts. I have no detailed reference materials to cause AMS and, while not a throw-together kit, no big problems seem likely. See profile at: http://www.modelbud.pl/ , click on CDE and find C-12 Lohner R1 One vendor, Karaya: http://www.karaya.ceti.pl/, click on wings, then Choroszy, scroll down to C12, Lohner R1, $39.00 This is the one I used. Very good service. There may be others. Regards, Mike Kavanaugh __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. Basically I modified stuff I'd mixed for French 5 color to match the box art that was on the Hit Kit combination of A.1 Balilla and the Ford Tfc. The paints were Ceramcoat thinned with Future. There was an oil wasg of black & burnt umber mix and then a flat coat of Future and Micro Scale Acrylic flat. sp > Hey, sp!
