Message-ID: Hi Folks, Got my Bregeut, in the correct scale, today from Squadron. Looks decent. Not having the B kit handy, I don't know how close these 2 are, but this one looks okay. Need to see how close it is to plans, but I don't get too crazy about this...This looks like an A2...That's usually enough for me..Comes with so-so resin but really nice p/e, especially for the cockpit and side grills..Cockpit looks like it is pretty detailed. White metal prop and guns, but will probably carve a wood prop and use photo-etch for the guns. Plastic is okay. Fuselage stitching, while a bit heavy, is a nice representation. Wings have nicely done tapes and should be thin enough at the trailing edges with some careful cleanup. Some flash. Markings are really nice for a USAS machine of the 96th Aero Squadron flown by Cpt. James Summersett, Jr. Red Devil markings are done well. Instructions are decent with exploded drawings and a rigging diagram. This kit was $33.96 on pre-order from Squadron...Can I say it was worth it??? Maybe....These are still very much limited-release, lo-tech kits...If you're looking for a shake and bake, this ain't it, but if you're like me and love Bregeuts, get it, but wait until it goes on sale...Similar situation, IMHO, as the AEG:okay at the sale price, but a little steep for what you get at the full price....At least the pre-order price was discounted and Squadron picked up the shipping as well as not charging the cc until shipped. Also, only one of it's kind out there, so probably worth your support if you like these French 2-Seaters. Email me if you have any specific questions.... Regards, John P.S. I guess they didn't sell too many of the Nieuport 24/27 kits as the box bottom is a recycled 24/27 top!!! ************************************************************************ If you received this e-mail in error please delete it and notify the sender as soon as possible. However I happen to like B-M and Pegasus kits and have always been complimentary about the kits I've built. I imagine he might respond, (or not respond) differently if I'd blasted him about quality issues. I believe he does quite a bit of the work himself and so it's natural for him to react differently than a large company when confronted by a negatively toned message. Complaints can be couched in terms that are not personal. While they may not be as immediately satisfying to send, they are more often than not met with more satisfying responses resulting in solved problems rather than ruffled feathers. sp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2003 17:34:12 -0600 From: MFlake@TarrantCounty.com To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Ron Goodwin died today at 77 Message-ID: <71EA257E03C4D511B8ED00065B04BF9404AF3A52@itcrex001.tarrantcounty.com> Ron Goodwin composed the music for "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines," a movie that probably began my love affair with the stringbags we model. The next time you watch the movie, notice the different themes he composed for each of the main competitors and how he weaves the themes in and out of each other throughout the race. Truly "magnificent" music. And the theme song is a riot. He composed music for other aviation-related movies including "633 Squadron." Together, those two are my favorite pieces of "flying" music. What I'm going to do is to put some decal tapes along the edges to seal the scotch tape tight. I've already coated it with future but I'm really afraid the glue on the tape may dry in time and the tape pop up. So I hand painted some decal with the silver dope mix, and tomorrow Ill cut tapes and install. I also painted decal brown for the stich protecting tapes and cdl for the strut reinforcements. I really don't know if I'll be able to wind the decal around the strut, since it is so thin, but I want to at least give it a try. I've done this, though with the Waldron punch rather than another, and it worked extremely well. The limiting factor was the sizes of punch I had, something I could probably fix by buying the other set as well, and maybe a third set from another manufacture - Holy Greenbacks Batman! In any case, after agonising forever about how to line them up properly it was incredibly easy. I stacked *by eye* one small, 10thou disk with one large 5thou disk and glued them, then made what felt like hundreds of the same subassembly. Then in a small jig (VERY simple, a box the size of the cylinder)I stacked enough pairs to make the finned section and ran a little liquid glue in. Done. It all seemed like rather alot of work, but I'll do it again next time I want a bit more special than usual rotary. I am talking 1:48. - I remember some mention of winding wire around a cylinder. - Lance, ofcourse, rolled his own PE for his felix engines. Are there any other techniques? Has anybody tried to stack brass discs? if so how does one produce a large number of identical discs without going mad. And, no, I dont have a lathe in my basement. thanks in advance Sanjeev ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2003 18:35:06 -0800 From: cfrieden@calpoly.edu Subject: RE: WW1 Ships/boats Message-ID: Marc Flake writes: > I don't know. The Empire B ships were a WWII standard design. The Bremen and Europa kits are probably of the postwar liners. I would love to build a Hog Islander (sort of the WWI equivalent to the Liberty ship), but I don’t know of any kits. There is a lot of WWI stuff available in 1/1200 and smaller scales, but these are mostly assembled metal models, not kits.
