Not only French, but the Russians didn't fly them either. But the British did. Makes you wonder... ;-) BTW and FWIW, both Choroszy kits showed up today - the Nie.17 and Nie.17bis. Awesome, but you can tell shortcuts were made with the Nie.17. The fuselage is a Revell copy, so corrections will have to be made. Still, the wings appear spot on (odd for me to say that model Nieuport wings are accurate ;-)) as do the rest of the pieces. Watch for an in the box from IM soon (hopefully Chris can hold me some places on the upcoming issue) and full builds of both to follow. The Nie.17 will take longer since not only are there corrections, but the interior detail is a tad sparse as well. FWIW, the Nie.17bis will be (like mentioned) finished as Nungesser's, while the Nie.17 will have the markings of Lt. Maurice Boyau of Esc. 77, decals for which have been already made. ;-) Matt Bittner ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 10:03:44 +1100 From: "Ross & Wendy Moorhouse" To: Subject: Re: What did you get for Christmas ? Now, they are all on my workbench. I have to build them quickly, because I am writing a review for an modelling magazine. The kits are very nice (especially the SPAd, excluding the mistakes) but I am vondering about the Tabloid/Schneider interior. Does anybody have a photo of the interior of the Tabloid and the Schneider ? (Tabloid will be No.1214, ex-Gordon Benett racer and Schneider will be a late type A-394 used by US Navy). The interior offered by Special Hobby is the same for both kits, but I think there was an evolution of this part of the plane during the years... I have already changed some emails wit one of the authors, Mr. P.A.Tesar (Mr. Zahalka is the second) concerning colours and markings (see bellow). Generaly, it is similar to the Albatros Oeffag book. It means english and czech languages, clear photos, drawings of Aviatik ser 38, 138 and 39 (D.II). There is description of development, serial production (including licence-built planes), operational use, colours, personal and unit markings, technical description. Some detail pictures of the plane from museum in Wien are there too. Colour plates are included too, for airplanes from all producers, but there are some but. Becouse the planned author lost his wife, another was chosen. But Mr Tesar told me, that he has had no possibility to check pictures before printing, so there are some problems with colour reresentation and density of spotches. If you want, I can resend those fails off-lis or on-list. For the Fllik 60J fans, the band is red without any written questions. :-) I am in discus with Mr Tesar about colours of 38.02. He presented it without "autumn leafs" spotches on wing, so they are clear doped. I can inform about results later, after finish. Generally, it is good book for the price (400 CZK so around 13USD). The wood finish and the weathering of the >CDL >looks great. Agreed. The only thing I'd question a bit is the sheer amount of oil staining on the wing roots top and bottom. The author/builder seems to assume that inline engines spewed vast amounts of oil - something worse than that spewed by rotaries - yet as far as I can tell from photos they *didn't*, and most of the oil staining would be due to spills during servicing, catastrophic engine failure OR would tend to show up under the fuselage where oilseal leaks allowed oil to accumulate in the bottom of the engine bay and seep out. However, it doesn't detract. The models an excellent build of a very decent kit. >BTW, what's the wrong scale there? It's the right sized model! ;-) > Only to the small minded. We returned on Christmas Day and luckily just bumped the edge of the great eastern snowstorm. Having missed the big day, we decided to celebrate a belated Christmas: decorated the tree with my collection of airplane ornaments Thursday and will have Christmas Eve Friday evening (when I can *finally* open my Secret Santa present :-) Believe it or not, I have finally finished my "weekend build" from last June; photos of that durned Polish Hannover will arrive in the list mailbox soon. And another long-time-in-progress build of an Austrian Fokker B.I(M.10) is in its last stages. Anyhoo, is nice to be back amongst friends--especially ones who seem to have been very, very good and thus received a wonderful haul of OT stuff to keep them out of trouble for the coming year. WHile maybe from the message and the artistic point of view one of the last interesting pictures, have a special look at: http://www.art-ww1.com/trame/057text.html That is a picture that has been published a number of times (but AFAIK always in Black and White only), eg in the O'Connor Air Aces of the AH Empire book. It is the source for the markings of Arigi (5X), Kiss (7) and Maier (not sure about the name, from memory only, but he was the Flik commander) that have been around ever since interpreted from that paining by O'Connor. I think these aircraft are also included in hte latest Roden D III 153 early series. Highly interesting to see that opicture in coolor (I think the original title is "Kaiserstaffel" or something like that BTW) Volker > Just stumbled over this > and i Don't remember ever seeing it before > > http://www.art-ww1.com/gb/peintre.html > > Great stuff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 15:20:41 +0900 From: xiaoz To: Subject: Freedom Message-ID: <200212270620.BAA86618@mustang.sr.unh.edu>

It would seem this is a republishing of James all the worlds aircraft published in 1919. This book has some funny terms such as a caption for a N17 picture reading as "Nieuport 17 Destroyer" Or an "Albatros DIII Chaser" - I think this is a translation from the French word for this class of aircraft "Biplan De Chasse"?? A Fokker DVIII has a description that wonders if the wing was developed by Junkers and was metal. Lots of drawings of details. all in all a great book though the preface is amusing. The preface to the book was written in 1919 by CG Grey and relates how German aircraft look the part but have bad construction, British aircraft of the later war years as looking more and more hunnish. Oh and of course British Aircraft were more aeronautically advanced than the Germans. Heres one Matt will like; "As regards the French section, it has been extremely difficult to obtain information from the French firms, chiefly one believes because there has been so little new in French design in the last two years....." Sheesh and someone thought Biggles was arrogant. OT models and a book for Christmas - tis a great Christmas Ray ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 01:09:23 -0600 From: "John Glaser" To: Subject: RE: 1/28 Fokker D.VII Message-ID: <002201c2ad76$e2e99420$0500a8c0@SalesLogixGuru.com> Keywords: WW1 List Bucky: FSM January 1999 has the article on corrections. One of my own Xmas bennies was a 1/28 Revell Fokker D.VII from a Japanese modeler friend who wouldn't touch something fabric-winged with a twenty-nine-and-half-foot pole. Anyone have the lowdown on this kit? Is it worth the trouble of building? Since there is no aftermarket lozenge out there for this baby, it would mean happy hours and $$$ in front of the computer whipping something up for the ALPS to print out. Just fingering the sprues my modeler instincts tell me the kit seems a little...well...svelte, but I'm not sure. And it might be a fun project to do something OT in this Godzilla scale.
