I recall an attempt to count the population during King David's reign and this resulted in a pestilence that killed 70,000! Jewish law forbade direct counting of the population. Rather than count them directly, they did it indirectly with each person of age contributing a coin into the state coffers, and they counted the coins. This solved various public financing issues. The lesson is clear: unless your kit stash is having indirect adverse impact on your bank balance, don't worry. By the way, I would like to thank my Secret Santa - your excellent gift was opened today - sorry I couldn't wait. In another story a pilot accidentally inverts his aircraft while trying to remove the magazine from his Lewis gun, and is only saved from death because it *wouldn't* come off with him hanging outside his cockpit holding onto the ammo drum. Bloody unbelievable eh? In fact, like about 2/3 of the tales in the Biggles books it's *true* though the name of the actual pilot (Strange) isn't used. Biggles seems arrogant etc. to you but when the stories were written (1932?1938) he'd have been recognisable as a perfectly normal RAF type to his audience. I'd imagine that Johns would have captured the type pretty well too, having been a pilot himself. Incidentally, you mention there being two OT books. That I know of (and excluding omnibus editions including its and pieces from others) there are eight of them Camels are Coming Biggles of the Camel Squadron Biggles Learns to Fly Biggles Flies East Biggles in France Biggles of 266 Biggles of the Royal Flying Corps (which has new material but may also have a couple of stories from an earlier book) The eighth "Biggles, Air Ace" is a compilation of stories published in magazines but never in book form. It was published in about 1998 and there were only a few hundred copies - my brother has one and won't let me borrow it :-) >You know I have a very warped sense of humour. I come from NSW. Take it from me - I'm an engineer and maths did me no good at all until I discovered binary. Now models are either "1" (buy) or "0" (don't buy" and the "0" doesn't work so well. >The question is how bad is it for other list members? Question assumes it's bad to have too many models to finish in a lifetime, which is not proven. However, to look at teh shelves in my model room one would assume no more than (around) 150 kits. This is misleading, since the two cartons on top hold another 120 kits (vacforms and bagged 1/72) and there are six more cartons downstairs. Somehow - that never seems like too many for me...... Message-ID: Well, it is that time of year for overindulgence and quiet reflection. May I give you all a thought? We all strive to be as good as possible at our chosen creative endeavour, in this case, modelling. Some years ago I came across this, and it encapsulates perfectly how I feel about the intensity of the experience. May you all have a peaceful polystyrene Christmas. N To the young people of this country I wish to say: if you practice an art, be proud of it, and make it proud of you;....... turn to the art which has moved you most readily, take what part in it you can, as participant, spectator, secret practitioner, or hanger-on and waiter at the door. Make your living in any way you can, but neglect no sacrifice at your chosen altar. It may break your heart, it may drive you half mad, it may betray you into unrealizable ambitions or blind you to mercantile opportunities with its wandering fires. But it will fill your heart before it breaks it; it will make you a person in your own right; it will open the temple doors to you and enable you to walk with those who have come nearest among men to what men may sometime be. from: Maxwell Anderson: Essence of Tragedy -- Nigel Cheffers-Heard photography + design tel: +44 (0)1392 87 58 57 fax: +44 (0)1392 87 74 97 mobile: 0771 261 4514 nigelch@cheffers.co.uk www.cheffers.co.uk Laburnums, Bridge Hill Topsham, Exeter EX3 0QQ, UK ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 07:34:33 +0000 From: Nigel Cheffers-Heard To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: RE: Biggles Message-ID: I have a client who is a serious London lawyer. She told me about their annual review process where the junior lawyers submit themselves for examination to determine if they are suitable material to become salaried partners. (Code for "RICH") She said that it was a pretty uninspiring day, long, and with dull applicants. When asked "what was the last book you read" they all came out with highfalutin' titles that they thought would impress the panel. Any question about the content was met with embarrassed silences. The last applicant of the day seemed ok-ish, but when asked the book question, he lit up and gushed "Biggles Flies East"! She said, "I thought to myself "That's the kind of chap I want in my firm", so we gave it to him." There is a moral to be drawn here, but I can't for the life of me see what it is.... any ideas? My buy rate hasn't decreased too much - I reckon over 1000. Howevere, a cull is planned for the New Year. I recently moved them from the attic to a more accessible. My problem was a long spell when, as a single chap, I collected themes, so there are all the Isreali Air Force kits, all the Argentine Air Force kits, huge numbers of WW2 & modern 1/144th kits......
