The surface should be relatively glossy. Then the wash stays where you want it, rather than 'wicking' and spreading out through the matt paint. I like to use Burnt Sienna as the wash tone for all but black and dark grey areas. I also use black for silver and metallic areas, though it may be a mixed wash of black and burnt sienna for engines and the like because I like the oily effect it gives. I'm not sure what effect you are looking for if you are doing the washes over matt or flat surfaces, because this will not let the wash 'settle' in the low areas. Instead it will diffuse the wash over the surrounding area and leave a line at the boundary, in my experience. .Mark. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Nov 2002 13:53:10 -0300 From: "Diego Fernetti" To: Subject: Casting a spell Message-ID: <007d01c28bfe$5085df60$4640a8c0@ssp.salud.rosario.gov.ar> Pedro! > Not to mention Cane toads... Something you can buy at a Dentist's supplies shop (it's not expensive at all) or politely ask to your doc. My experience is that dentists are usually very interested to hear how we hobbysts use their techniques and tools (and make an interesting change of subject from cavities and fees). My doc has even given me some spare/old tools and grinding stones and he once gave me a little of the clay powder to make molds. I never used it to cast, though, I made a base with it. > I think I have it. Will look through my stack of FSM later tonight Good luck! Using the same methods on the same objects, I did not run into those troubles. Matt acrylic surfaces are to be avoided 'cause those staining problems , therefore I prefer gloss surfaces. But maybe there are small details which make the difference. I am using Gunze and Tamiya alcohol based paints, I used waterbased Lifecolor ( seems to be comparable to Ceramtex) only once. I am spraying the Gunze and Tamiya paints to a near gloss, not mirror gloss sheen. The thinner for oils is Daley Rowney's Low Odour Thinner, which don't harm the base at all. White spirit is to be avoided, as this is a dubious mix of several components. Every brand seems to be use a different mixture. Rectified Turpentine is a expedient solution if Daley's is not available. For real wheathering in the literal meaning I use pure water based acrylics from Vallejo/Andrea, usually on a semimatte or matt surface. Sorry that I can't offer more help. Keep experimenting! Oils are the best! So Sanjeev, caught in his most multifarious mode, has kindly agreed to post the list at http://www.odobenus.net/kr/pace_vfl.htm The list has more ot kits than OT, but there are some good kits from C.A.Atkins, Contrail, D&R, Falcon, Formaplane, ID, Koster, Lone Star, Roseplane, Sierra, Tom's, and many others--at very reasonable prices. There's a further explanation of the ordering arrangements at the site above. Send your orders to me directly, not Sanjeev, by Sunday evening, EST, Nov. 17. Getting into the Secret Santa thing sorta broke my digest mode habit and I need to get back to it. I've made progress on several fronts but nothing completed to my satisfaction . . . still fighting ams. I'll take photos when satisfied. I've been developing my skills, now feeling comfortable with vacforms and resin, especially pinning thin resin wings. I've built large and small vacform machines, using the small one to make copies of kit cowls because I screw up a few before I get the cutaway right. Still working to get the proper color ceramcoat/future mix for CDL, mainly the reason the Bristol Scout's been painted three times. I'm following Pedro's casting thread with interest because that's what I want to try next. My modeling has slowed since my workroom is next to my 10-month old grandson's room and I don't run the compressor when he's sleeping. And, as I told a listee earlier, when he's awake, I tend to spend more time with him than with the kits . . . they'll always be there. Back to lurk/digest mode. This is probably too long.
