I guess I can mask around where I have to sand to minimise the damage right enough. The challenge is going to be to match the colour after sanding. part of it will be hidden by the black stripes but it will need touching up I think. I underestimated how thick the paint I had mixed was (also the quantity). I had thinned it until it dripped like milk but I guess I underestimated the effects of the gloss white and black in the mix, which is thicker of course. I am trying out Hans' mix for Silbergrau - I'm finding it gives a very satisfying result colourwise (Thanks Hans!). For those interested, its 80% Tamiya Matt Aluminium, 20% Tamiya Gloss White, and a touch of Tamiya Gloss Black. I put two touches of the black in and the result is a bit darker than what I was aiming for but the result is still in an acceptable range IMHO. Neil asks: Brent - You give your Mother-In -Law models for Christmas? Yup, I guess I am starting a tradition. She requested a small (1/72), colorful biplane last year. I gave her the first Roden D.VII I built. She really seemed to enjoy it. So I figure I'll slap another model together for her. Since it's for her it needs to be colorful. Since Christmas isn't *that* far away and I am moving I need as many shortcuts as I can get. The answer is decals. Luckily Americal/Gryphon have supplied me with the candy stripes for a couple of Udet's planes. I feel Udet's D.VII with red striped wing would tickle her fancy. I'll use the extra red stripes Dr. Merrill thoughtfully supplied in the decal pack. I currently believe the red stripes are incorrect, so I don't mind the model not being included in my collection Because I am less than enthused about *another* D.VII I am entertaining the notion of Udet's striped Dr.I. The Eduard kit is an easier build, but I'm not real keen on the paint job. No lozenge on the wings though. Hmmmm... No I am NOT going to give her Dilthey's D.Va as my wife suggested. That model fought me every inch of the way. It's staying! Later! Brent _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses. I had EIV parts in an EIII box with EIII decals and instructions. Last night I emailed Eduards customer service asking what would be the best thing to do. 2 Hours ago I got an email back saying they had just put a set of EIII parts in the mail. I figured I would be told to take the model back to where I bought it, or return the EIV parts to eduard. Both suggestions would have been fine with me. So now I have a set of EIV parts as a bonus. I call that great customer service. The first one I've done was when I was working out of state for weeks at a time. My kits and supplies were written off as entertainment expenses. Other people I know have racecars with their business name painted all over. This is an advertising expense. Both are bamboozles. You'd have a hard time using example no. 2 with modeling anyhow... And he told me that hobbies are tax >deductable ??!! Yes right, does he wish! I wish professional economists' services were tax deductible too then I could rent my services out, and the tax break would give my customers more incentive to hire me. To say your friend at the hobby shop has a conflict of interest in giving this advice, is a gross understatment. You have to be careful and I would consult a tax attourney - nobody I know who's experienced a tax audit, liked it very much. If you have a business that's your hobby, you might be able to deduct expenses. But like with regular businesses, you have to show a profit after a certain number of years. I've heard urban myths of cases won when there's a profit "objective", even when there are many years of losses but I wouldn't think it's that worthwhile. Besides, think of the most you'd be gaining. If you're in the 25% tax bracket and you spend $800/year on your hobby "Business", you pocket $200 or $4/week. I believe too that there is no statute of limitations on tax evasion.:) Is that correct Mr. Muth? Message-ID: <200211111004.17806.Ray_Boorman@telus.net> I have just been amazed (yes I know it doesnt take much). I decided to re-finish a Sierra Scale DFW that had been languishing on my bench since last year. At the point I lost interest it just needed landing gear on. Basically the reason I lost interest was that I wrecked the Ceramcoat paint on top of the upper and lower wings, such that it came away in patches. This was after it had been rigged and decaled. (Dont ask how! Only I could do what I did, something about rubbing alchohol and tipped bottles and a cat). Anyway I decided that I can re-finish this model before the end of the year, just take the upper wing off, sand the wings then re-paint and decal. Well I got all the struts disconnected and figured I could pull the wing away. Nope the invisible thread rigging would not budge. I thought it would pull out of its holes. Not one bit of rigging pulled. I had to snip every peice. Not only would the rigging not pull, it was holding all the struts tight and bent the wings when I tried to pull on the upper wing. What I dont understand is why when I dont want to dislodge rigging I can do it easily ;) Ray ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 12:29:46 -0600 From: "Mark Shannon" To: Subject: Re: A Strange Occurrence Message-ID: <002401c289b0$4fe12600$2272fea9@theshann> I'm not familiar with Maskol, but I wonder if it contains either ammonia or isopropyl alcohol - either of those will take Future right off. .Mark. ----- Original Message ----- From: "NEIL EDDY" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Monday, November 11, 2002 9:48 AM Subject: [WWI] A Strange Occurrence > G'day Listees; > > I noticed something strange tonight when I removed the liquid mask off the > tail section of my Pfalz, which I had painted Matt Black (Tamiya) a couple > of days ago. > > The day before masking and the day after it had been sprayed, I covered the > tailplane and rudder with Future in order to protect the finish. etc etc. > > I gave this a day to harden prior to masking and spraying the main colour. > > I then covered the tail and rudder with Humbrol Maskol except where the > black meets the main colour, which I masked with masking tape to get a > straight edge. > > After giving the main colour (runs 'n all) time to dry completely, I removed > the masking tape and the Maskol tonight. > > To my surprise, the only Future left on the rudder and tail was where the > masking tape previously was.
