I've heard the kit was started back in the fifties during the same time when Revell was doing the other big three kits, and the unfinished molds languished for decades. I don't know if this is true. If it is, it probably means the kit was done up using mainly the Nieto drawings, which came out in the early 50s, and show a lot of the same errors as the kit. But the kit also has things that are non-Nieto, so a combination of sources must've been used. I built the thing when it was released, and made the major mods to correct it and was happy with the finished product....but that fuselage ( and resultant tail weirdness) did take some work...... Message-ID: <3DBDA5CA.BB6BEE0@rogers.com> I wasn't talking of molds - they aren't required with this process. What is being carved by the machine is the actual object itself. The difficult part with the current system is converting drawings into a complex 3d object - errors are difficult to correct, and the skill of the master mold maker is rare. On the other hand a drawing is much easier to do - and easier to correct, and the computer then renders the drawing automatically. Of course this could be used to make molds as well but I don't see the point, unless large quantities are required, which isn't the case for the limited run kit market. BTW - how long did it take to do your illustrations minus the colour work and the hidden details? On the other hand a drawing is much >easier to do - and easier to correct, and the computer then renders >the drawing automatically. However, consider this. A set of drawings is usually 3 view plus anumber of cross sections. It's no great problem for an expert to feed this data into a 3d milling system but a huge difficulty to get an accurate output from it. For a start, what do you tell the machine to do to the surface between the cross sections? Mill in a straight line? Do a best fit curve between stations? Go straight line between the last three stations and best fit curve between there and the firewall? What about that subtle change in section and curvature between section AA and section BB? How *many* sections do you need for the machine software to interpolate correctly (actually, the answer is probably infinite, but how many to be "close enough" and then what is "close enough" While the technology has great potential I suspect that the old old computer industry saw will still apply "Garbage in, garbage out" and any set of drawings not enormously more sophisticated than any we're used to now will qualify as insufficient to be better than garbage. >Of course this could be used to make molds >as well but I don't see the point, unless large quantities are >required, which isn't the case for the limited run kit market. >BTW - how long did it take to do your illustrations minus the colour >work and the hidden details? IMO Mark's excellent renderings represent an enormous amount of work by a real expert, yet are of reasonably simple subjects. In any case, if modelling is reduced to a keyboard and software exercise I'll find something else to do as a hobby. I spend several hours every day producing schematics, plans and 3 views at work and don't plan on being bored sh*tless at home as well. I get *my* thrills in modelling from using my hands to produce something tangible and (in my eyes) worthwhile using my barely adequate motor skills. The destination isn't as important to me as the journey and any technology used to skip the former enroute to the later is no improvement. Might just as well buy diecasts and sell my kits Of course, given that other modellers get *their* thrills by having large built collections YMMV and so it should be. Don't even start trying to imagine Marshall Dillon, ( James Arness) on one of those creatures. It would run off all alone and leave him standing there with both feet firmly planted on the ground. It might just run off when it saw him approaching. Additional thing. Genghis could have flown a 1/2 size replica of that SE5 and gotten great perfomance. It would also be much harder to see. And imagine the great fuel savings. Firing two Lewis BB guns might have been a problem. Lee M. Just as an aside a friend of ours used to have a Granddaughter clock which was a couple of hundred years old. Originally it had been custom made to allow for the owner to be placed inside after she died I suppose for a short period or it might have got a tad smelly. Supposedly she had a fear of being buried alive. Looking inside where she would have been placed there was only enough room for someone about 4 ft tall and very very slim. The front door of the clock was solid except for a little porthole type window. Imagine coming down to breakfast to be greeted by a dead person pearing back at you ...... I remember seeing this bird on the DeVries "Dove of War" book. Of course, after seeing so many similar aircraft you end not remembering a single detail of any of them. One of the things that get my attention while looking at taube-like aircraft is the extreme drag that those undercarriage assemblies must have produced. > Diago and Neil can build ot together. Do you have part # 43 at hand, Neil? It's not on the sprues here. I planned a house where there are an area above the living room wich will be empty until the roof of the second story. I always envisioned a couple of large scale models (1/6 or 1/8) hanging in that space: a LVG C.VI and an allied scout, but still can't decide wich. Mmmm.... maybe a project for my retirement. Probably 1/144 big Austrian bomber prototype, or a R 3-motor flying boat. And of course some OT ships, the best in the 1/400. Has anybody some experience with selling kits on the E-Bay? I want to sell Czechmaster 1/72 resin Junkers J.I (guess why?) on the E-Bay, more for fun than for money, but of course money counts too. I can also sell it without auction to some of the list Friends who is a collector, and wants this kit anyway. Can someone help me to sell it? Any hints etc.? Please, contact me off list. Cheers! First, Andreas's Camel: Excellent build and paint job. You mention flaws, I haven't been able to discover none, except the *apparent* absence of clear inspection panels on the leading edges of the wings. Han's Albatros: Wonderful as well, I love the wooden shade of the fuselage. Hope I could have done my own model as good as this one (of course, I make mine in 1/72) Maybe someday with a Roden kit. The sheen of the metal parts and the underside of wings look most realistic. Well done! D. ------------------------------ End of WWI Digest 4736 **********************
