It's definetely a better basis to make a correct D VII than the Revell 1/28 version. It represents an early version and it's not without it problems. It's a short run kit, so don't expect Hasegawa moulding quality. The Tarnstoff decals are critised by some, others say: perfect. So make your own opinion. For all of us making or collecting large scale, it's a must. As far as I am informed: Next one should be a Fokker E.III. I mentioned that I'd built mine originally to build stick-n-tissue flying models which are much bigger than plastic models. Thus, its 12x24" bulk forms a nice table on which to work and that's sort of satisfying. BUT....when I'm doing things like putting upper wings on, or touching up paint once the struts are in place (I'm sure you guys don't need to do that but I do), it seemed like a nice idea to have a small magnet board where I could attach a model and yet be able to move the board around, like rotate it so I could get at the model from all sides, pick it up so I could get it to eye level if necessary, etc. So...I took a piece of sheet metal (6"x24") that I'd gotten from Home Depot and cut it to fit on a 7.5x9.5 ceramic tile. I'd bought the metal a while ago but I think it was $4CDN. The tile cost me 71 cents. Now cutting the metal was a challenge as my band saw is in storage. But I found that one can actually cut metal with some perserverance and a box cutter. This is how I started and I was part way through it (just repeatedly scribing it) when it occurred to me that I had a Dremel tool sitting idle. So, I attached a cut-off wheel in it and I, well...cut it off. The edge is a bit ragged when done this way but a bit of sandpaper and a lack of concern solves that problem. Anyways, I'm delighted with the results. The underside of the tile is even nicely grooved to provide a non-slip surface. Here's a photo: http://www3.sympatico.ca/larrym/images/model_board.jpg I show it in that orientation to give you an idea of how well the models are held in place by two thin, unobtrusive magnets. Those models simply will not move unless I lift those magnets first. -- Cheers --- Larry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 15:38:13 -0500 From: "Harris, Mack" To: "World War I (E-mail)" Subject: new kits Message-ID: Got this today and cut down to this entry.
