It made flying the plane a lot easier if you did not have to figure out what had to be moved when things were used or in the case of bombs, left the airframe in a hurry. When I first started flying, I was very shocked when I found out that part of my crew duties were to keep the airplane load adjusted so that the CG did not move very much during a flight. The cargo on a KC-135 was easy, because it did not move, but the fuel was another matter. The thing that surprised me was that to keep the plane in balance, the CG could only move fore and aft within a 13in long space that ran about in line with the leading edge of the wing spar. One of the tests that we were shown was to have two 150lb men stand on the CG of a balanced plane in flight. While we were watching the instruments and the auto pilot, they would have the two men run to the front of the plane. They would then run to the back of the plane. That 300lbs moving that much would send the trim system in to overdrive just to keep the plane balanced. On the fighters, the ammo was usually placed in a position where the loss of weight as it was used would have very little effect on the CG. The guns on the other hand, if they were removed, some form of ballast would be installed in their place. The more complex our planes get, the margin for error gets smaller. My guess would be that there was a much larger margin for error then that now, and the removal of a gum, would not make that much difference in the performance of the airplane. No, but I've seen the original in Paris. BTW, I'm researching now very interesting event: in January 1915 in Galizien Austrians used for the first time heavy artillery bombardment coordinated by the radio-equipped airplane. To bombard captured by Russians town of Tarnow, they organized a system of the heavy (305 and 420mm) guns and the small airfield and auxilliary balloon position near the village of Biadoliny. Bombardment was extremely effective! In the mid '90s Polish environment architect from Krakow, Dr Krzysztof Wielgus (historical fortifications specialist) made a deep historical and archeological study of that events and the positions. Imagine this diorama: heavy guns, Albies B and Lohners, and Drachen balloon! Cheers! Everything I've read about the Lewis gun was that it was a real pain in the ass except for being able to be fired upward. Reloading in flight was supposedly quite perilous. So why didn't Royal Aircraft arm it with twin Vickers, like the Camel and Spad XIII, instead? The Germans had certainly shown that twin .30s worked well. Did it have something to do with the fuel tank (and the SE5's long cruising time)? I need my sleep!
