Having done absolutely no research on the subject re: Albatros wing camo, I've always wondered if the violet and brown weren't actually the same color. It doesn't take much fading/weathering for dark reds and violets to appear brown--I had a dark red car in the 80's that, by the 90's, people insisted on calling brown. You can simulate this with Photoshop: pick a nice rich reddish violet as your foreground color, then use the RGB 'Color' palette to reduce the amount of red--doesn't take much fiddling to turn brown... I don't think this would explain it, Karen. Weren't all the 2-color schemes with mauve as one of the colors such that the center of the wing was mauve while the tips were green? If so, this wouldn't explain a pale green wingtip, an olive wingtip and a dark red center section that's reported in the Flying Circus document. If the mauve had just turned brown it would have produced wings that had green tips and a brown center, no? I don't think it's insignificant that one of the colors on the wings matches the marking band around the rear of the fuselage. -- Cheers --- Larry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2002 13:25:08 -0400 From: "tsollers" To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: image revesion Message-ID: <200210211725.g9LHPOb21884@mail.bcpl.net> Mark: Really excellent stuff. While it´s just to late over here to look into the other questions: There was an Idflieg Anweisung from April 12, 1917, describing the change from "reddish brown" to "lilac" (mauve) in order to provide some difference to teh allied camouflage (French, I would guess). So the fact that there were two distinct colors seems assured - I think the Anweisung is also published somewhere in CCI or Windsock (but I´ve never seen the original thing, so this is from those transcripts found in a number of places)... Could easly be bigger - the nature of the CAD modeling allows unlimited scaling, but the maps ARE resolution dependant - i think the fuse map is about 2000 pixels front to back which should allow a fairly huge output size. I'd bet It would hold up to 6 feet or so because the modeling tends to enforce the maps. But I would have to experiment a little. of course you pay for size with time. everything takes longer. but with my new machine it wouldn't be too bad. I have noticed that these images hold up surprisingly well when enlarged - and think that a 4000 pixel image would probably be ok up to 30 inches or so... yes - i know that's only 133 DPI, which might be a little extreme. again, I'd have to do some experimenting, and the output device has a big role. The change from brown to violet was made at the time when the 3-colour scheme was supposed to be in use, hence my curiosity if the scheme went from brown/green/green to violet/green/green. DSA did research in which he claimed to have identified patterns in the three colour schemes on DIIs which could be identified by batch and maker by the pattern. The colours are identified in an intelligence report on a captured DIII - olive green, pale brunswick green and dark venitian red The point that I (and other) find curious is that if we had a 3 colour scheme before the change to mauve/lilac/violet/purple, did we have a three colour scheme of violet + the two greens, later rationalised to violet green. My usual thoughts are there is no evidence either way - there are photos of Albatros ordered after the switch with three tone wings. Others remain sceptical about the whole thing. FWIW Eduard had been pretty good at hitting release dates before they moved to the higher quality moulding, and at least as good as most other companies since. Constant whining about having to wait a bit will not make anything appear faster - but you can bet that Eduard will take soon the Tamiya road and stop telling us what's coming entirely unless the plastic is already being boxed. Phonix built planes had much lighter finish on the struts than HB built planes but I don't know what it is. I see numerous illustrations that show the struts wrapped in fabric, but I have no pictures that support this. On page 12 of the FMP book on the D.1 there is a photo of a HB built ship with a damaged strut. The strut has regular dent indicating to me that it might be sheathed in metal and not just a wooden strut, this would create quite a headache.
