Yesterday, the USA IPMS Region II convention was held at Hargerstown, Maryland. Having arisen at 6:24AM, soemwhat early for me on a weekend, Sanjeev Hirve and Greg Balzer arrived at my abode at 7:45AM as arranged. It took only an hour to get to the convention from my place. Once there I hooked up with Dame Karen and Bruce Sinard - caught them furtively smoking outside in the car park. I would say the convention was a success. Perhaps not as many entrees as in past years but a fair number - maybe 400 or so. Karen's "Hun in the Sun" and Sanjeev's FE-2 won Best Diorama and Aircraft, respectively: naturally, they'd both picked up first in their respective categories prior. Bruce's Mac Phönix D.I was 3rd in 1/72nd scale biplanes-rigged. I picked up a first in vacuform/scratchbuilds though there were only 2 entrants in that category, unfortunately. Karen, Bruce and I also picked up some off-topic category awards, so we went home fairly satisfied. As usual, some minor disaster befell Sanjeev. At the Nationals, while we were asleep, a car had lost its wheel at 2AM in the morning and said wheel had come bouncing 250 feet from the road across the car park, hitting Sanjeev's driver door panel. This time, he decided to leave his camera at the hotel though it has since been retrieved so all's well that ends well, I suppose. In sum, a most enjoyable day out with a bunch of friends. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 12:38:32 -0400 From: Larry Marshall To: wwi@wwi-models.org Subject: Re: WWI list members at the Region II Convention Message-ID: <200209291238.32689.larrym@sympatico.ca> > I would say the convention was a success. There is even some reasonable interior details inside the fuselage halves and more details to be added. Separate ailerons while rudder/fin and horizontal tail are one-piece mouldings. The usual bag of slightly bent w/m goodies, the struts especially seems to suffer from handling. Maybe not as good as Eduards latest, but still a nice kit which can be built straight out of the box or super detailed. The advantage of having a standing order for kits from Blue Bax / Pegasus is that you get them before the rest and aslo some of the first mouldings. I have hardly ever seem any ripples on my kits. Adding to what Peter L wrote on SAvMI and its owners, I just got a Beaufighter special from them, so if they have gone bust, it must have been very recently. But once there, the weather turned summery again and the modeling gods beamed on us all. Mike and Greg were aboard as observers; the rest of us entered models in the competition. As near as I remember, five of us listees submitted about 14 or 15 models, including ot stuff, and went home with 13 awards, including two 'Best ofs'--not too shabby, I'd say. I wonder how many clubs and IPMS chapters have that good a percentage. To Michael's listing, I'll add that Tim's Gotha G.V took second in 1/72 biplanes, his 1/32 Nieuport 17 took first in 1/32 and larger biplanes, and a vaguely OT car (was that a Duesenburg or a Stutz, Tim?) also placed in its category. Tim and Bruce are both digest lurkers and haven't yet sent photos for a gallery--whaddya waiting for, guys?? It never ceases to amaze and delight me that total strangers can come together 'in real life' as listees and feel like old friends. Mike drove in with his modeler girlfriend, Margaret, just to see the show, meet other listees, and partake of lunch--and it turned out that Mike was born and raised in Chicago about three blocks from where my mother now lives--small world (but he has the serious character flaw of being a White Sox instead of a Chicago Cubs fan). Greg is a great guy who spent the day impersonating a sponge as we all rattled on about building techniques. Look for his very nice Fokker Dr.I to soon appear in the list galleries. Michael noted that Sanjeev, in his extreme excitement at his FE2b getting the "Best Aircraft" award, left his camera behind in the banquet hall. And who do you suppose was called at 11:30 that evening to help track it down?? Yep, 'Mom' had to pick up after the boys... Yes, that's a wonderful thing that happens. Mike is a great guy, as the other listees, and once you meet them in person it's just like meeting again an old pal and you can share private jokes as if each one seeing each other every day. Not unlike meeting old friends from school, if Ihave to describe a similar feeling. Using a jig "a la > Lance" perhaps? Is the rigging functional? Diego: I used no jig. The top wing was two panels. They are joined with CA. Two holes into each root that matched holes in the opposite root. The holes were filled with CA and CA smeared on the flat part of the roots and the panels joined. Result: Hard CA "pins" joining the panels. Picked up at the join, the tips drooped due to the long, thin resin panels. I added the kingposts and rigged with stretched sprue. This allowed me to pick up the wing by the join in the center and the whole thing was perfectly flat tip to tip. This way I mounted the wing on the cabaine tressle at the center. Then it was a matter of adjusting the struts and popping them in place. Probably the easiest part of the model. Rigging was all HSP. The kingpost rigging went through holes in the wing and was run corner to corner forming an X over the kingposts. This way I could put considerable tension on the lines. Worked like a champ Here is a photo of the top wing supported only by the tressle and the kingposts. HSP is definitely structural. http://web.tampabay.rr.com/sperry03/DSC00006.jpg Thanks for the kind words. sp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 14:08:07 +0100 From: "Pedro N. Here I am again at my office surrounded with reports I have to read and comment and really don't feel like it.... Anyway, my days in Prague were a Gas. Best of it all was, of course, meeting friends and I really want to thank Lubos, Fraser and Michal for a really joyful and busy OT day spent in the Kbelly museum (what a place, I hope the old lady at the old aircraft hangar isn't very upset with me for having to clean all the drool I left there...)and at the Hobby fair. There wasn't really anything new OT wise at the fair but I saw Fraser fighting his conscience over the Roden Strutter, which looked pretty good in the box (in the end his good angel won the battle and he went home empty handed. He said he was saving to buy the Eduard Camel and if you want to know when it will finally be out you'd better ask Fraser because we know he has information from reliable sources but won't disclosed it in public....) 2nd day, since Michal and Lubos were working, was spent window shopping with Fraser and we did the full tour of Pragues Hobby shops. I manged to grab some interesting things at a shop that had some 2nd hand stuff (like a Czeckmaster's Spad XIII, so now I'll probably be able to finish my Shamrock spad....). 3rd day was spent on a hike on the Sumava mountais with Michals Mom and sis, Fraser and Sylvia, Lovely Country, lovely people... I'll have picture from the museum to show you guys sometime in the future. Stay tuned Thanks again to Fraser, Michal and Lubos. Meeting them was the best of it all Pedro ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 23:33:32 +1000 From: "NEIL EDDY" To: Subject: RE: Fighting Triplanes and 'Flu Message-ID: <001401c26885$f8fa7da0$105132d2@default> Thanks Neil >From what I saw in the shop, its just full of interesting stuff - I can't wait to read about the "Poll" Triplane and some of the other more obscure birds. I'm really pleased about the price too - $30.00 AUD. The current ABE listing is anywhere between $140.00AUD (~ $75.00USD) to around $50.00AUD (~$25.00USD). I've paid a deposit on it, so I'm happy!
